Spotify has added a feature that lets you use AI to generate artwork for your playlist cover. At the time of writing, it’s available to users in Australia and New Zealand, the likely reason being that Spotify wants to trial the feature before rolling it out to everybody else.
The AI art tool aims to offer a fun and interesting way to customize the look of your playlists. Normally, the display image is made up of various album art selected from the songs inside your playlist.
To try the feature, click the “AI Playlist Art” banner that appears on the home screen on the mobile app. Alternatively, you can test the feature on a desktop by heading to theSpotify Playlist Art webpage.
How Spotify’s AI Playlist Art Works
Similar to howAI art generators like Midjourney, DALL-E, or Stable Diffusionwork, the Spotify AI playlist art tool chooses a single song from your selected playlist and creates a text prompt based on the features of that track. In turn, this is used to generate an image.
Curiously, according toSpotify’s FAQs, the “acoustic levels and energy of the track” are two features used to influence the look of the art. These terms are vague, so it’s anyone’s guess as to what exactly the AI model analyzes, which could be anything from decibel level to compression to volume peaks, etc.
Each artwork is unique, and it’s possible to choose to generate a new image if you don’t like it. But be careful; you can’t go back to an old image if you decide you like it better.
