The answer to today’s Wordle is “TITHE”.
The word “Tithe” is most commonly a noun, but can also be a verb. In both cases, the word refers to a small tax or levy people in certain religions pay to their local religious establishment or organization. A tithe is usually one-tenth of your income, and is traditional in the Abrahamic religions. However, some branches of these religions have rejected the idea completely, while others have reduced the amount expected.
According tothe Online Etymology Dictionary, the origin of “Tithe” is the Old English words “teogoþa” and “teoþa,” both of which refer to one-tenth of something. The Proto-Germanic word for this was “tegunthan,” which evolved from the Proto-Indo-European word “dekmto-” meaning ten. Specifying one-tenth of something used to refer to produce, but has been used to refer to support for religion since around the 1200s.
