Summary

The song inMichelob Ultra’s 2024 Super Bowl commercial is so catchy that viewers almost forget about the ad’s famous faces, including two world-famous athletes and the star ofTed Lasso. Dating back to the 1980s, Michelob, under the Anheuser-Busch label, has been featuring toe-tapping tracks in their commercials, advertising a breezy yet fun-loving lifestyle. Its slogans have evolved from “The night belongs to Michelob” to “Some days are better than others”. The brand’s 2024 Super Bowl ad is called “Superior Beach”, promoting the brand’s low-carbohydrate beer, Michelob Ultra.

For advertisers, a Super Bowl commercial is the holy grail. Whereas in everyday life, commercials are treated as pests to be swatted away as soon as the “skip” button is available, Super Bowl commercials have become their own phenomenon, and to many viewers, are just as important to the event as the coin toss or halftime show. Celebrities make frequent appearances in these commercials, and Michelob Ultra’s 2024 Super Bowl ad was no exception. But while123.7 million Super Bowl 2024 viewersgot to spot some A-list celebrities, they also grooved out to an awesome tune.

The Drifters' “Quando, Quando, Quando” Is The Song In Michelob Ultra’s 2024 Super Bowl Commercial

The Track Plays Overtop Messi Waiting For His Beer

In Michelob Ultra’s charming 90-second 2024 Super Bowl commercial, “Superior Beach”, Argentinian soccer superstar Lionel Andrés “Leo” Messi and two friends belly up to a beach bar for some draughts of Michelob Ultra. The friends get served first and before Messi gets his, the keg runs out. The bartender suggests a different beer, but Messi politely insists on Michelob Ultra, so she goes off in search of a fresh keg.

A soccer ball then lands at Messi’s feet and the other beach-goers point to the famous athlete in awe. As the playful-looking Messi engages them in a beachside pickup game, The Drifters' 1965 version of “Quando, Quando, Quando” kicks in. Translated to “When, When, When”, the beachy bossa-nova track by the blues and soul band is the perfect tune for Messi to kill time, deking out his opponents, including an adorable dog.

Just as he’s about to score a goal, the bartender gives a loud whistle to let Messi know his beer is ready. He graciously passes the ball off to another player, who scores, and Messi toasts his friends with his Michelob Ultra. Messi is perfectly charismatic in the commercial, but it’s the “Quando, Quando, Quando” song that sells the vibes of a relaxed, free-spirited beach crowd who are just as happy sharing their favorite beverage, Michelob Ultra, as they are playing soccer with celebrity athletes.

Ted Lasso’s Jason Sudeikis & Dan “The Man” Marino Connect The Michelob Ultra Commercial Back To Football

Michelob Ultra Threw In Some Easter Eggs For Super Bowl Fans

While Michelob Ultra’s “Superior Beach” ad is undoubtedly effective, some may raise their eyebrows at the company airing a commercial featuring a soccer star on football’s biggest night of the year. That’s whereTed Lasso’s Jason Sudeikis and football legend Dan “The Man” Marino come in. As Messi plays on the beach, Sudeikis pulls cans of Michelob Ultra out of a cooler as his friends watch the athlete in action. Sudeikis confirms that he and Leo “go way back.”

Michelob Ultra didn’t just stick Sudeikis in their commercial to boast another celebrity; Sudeikis' casting is a stroke of advertising genius. The actor-comedian is most famous for his Emmy-winning role of Ted Lasso in the Apple TV+ show of the same name. Ted is an American college football coach who is inexplicably offered a position as the coach of a Premier League soccer team in England. And though Sudeikis isn’t sporting Lasso’s signature mustache in the “Superior Beach” commercial, his fun-loving commentary — “Come on, [Messi’s] not even tryin' out there.” — is reminiscent of agood-natured Ted Lasso quote.

BeforeTed Lassopremiered in 2020, Jason Sudeikis played the character in an NBC Sports promotion for England’s Premier League.

TheTed Lassostar isn’t the commercial’s only connection to American football, though. As the beach players are closing in on Messi from both sides, he swiftly kicks the ball far out into the ocean, onto a yacht sporting the insignia, “The Dan Marina, Miami, FL”. On the yacht is, unsurprisingly, a case of Michelob Ultra, but also Dan “The Man” Marino.

Dan “The Man” famously played 17 seasons as quarterback for the Miami Dolphins, and though he never won a Super Bowl, is considered one of the best quarterbacks of all time. The icon easily catches Messi’s ball and throws it back, calling out his own name as he does. Indeed, Dan “The Man” has still got it, and he brought theMichelob Ultra 2024 commercialfull circle.
