What Is Reddit Flair? How to Use It
Reddit is one of the biggest social commons on the internet. But, for beginners, it can be daunting. Even for people who have been around the site for a while, its format can be a lot to take in and new features appear periodically. Plus, site-wide features often work differently in different subreddits.
One of these features is “flair”. Maybe you’ve never heard of it. Maybe you’ve seen it on the site but aren’t sure what it is or how to use it. Whatever the case, it’s a simple feature with sometimes complex implementation.
What Is Reddit Flair?
Flair is similar to a tag on other social media platforms. But, because Reddit already has subreddits, flair enables even more fine-tuned posting and navigation.
Those are the two main ways to use flair: to better explain the intention of your own posts and tosearch Reddit for specific kinds of postsfrom others. Just be aware that flair uses are different within subreddits and you need to be within a subreddit or posting to a specific subreddit to use it.

How to Use Flair on a Reddit Post
You can add flair to your post when adding one to a subreddit. You can also use flair when posting from the home page or your profile. In the latter case, select theChoose Communitybutton in the upper left of the Post editor. Selecting a community will reveal the flair available within that subreddit. Though, some communities don’t use flair at all.
If the community that you’re posting to does use flair, theFlairbutton is near the lower right under the text field but above theSave DraftandPostbuttons. There’s even a picture of a tag on the button to help you find and understand the tool. When you post with flair, the flair that you chose appears as a color-coded tag in the title of your post.

How to Use Flair to Filter Posts
If you’re scrolling and see flair on a post that interests you, click on the button to see only posts tagged with that flair. This method is handy because it works from the home page. Just know that clicking a flair button from a post on the home page will take you into the community in which that post originated.
If you’re already in a community, it’s possible to navigate flair in the same way. You can also scroll down until you see theFilter by Flairpanel in the margins on the right side of the screen. However, this is usually a selection of flair popular in the community at the time, rather than a full list of all of the flair available in that community.

Some communities also have theFilter by Flairbutton on a toolbar at the top of the page. This button does contain all the flair that that community uses. This is one of the best ways to find what you’re looking for sooner.
Is it Possible to Misuse Flair?
The way that flair works is pretty simple, but the ways that people or communities use it can be complicated. That can introduce confusion.
Perhaps the best example of this is the r/TrueFilm subreddit. This community is dedicated to “in-depth discussion of film”, so the flair used in this community is pretty specialist. If you aren’t familiar withReddit terms you should know, you might have to hang around the community to understand it better before you use it yourself.

Some people will also use flair that seems at first glance to be at odds with the intent of their post, usually to be amusing or elicit different kinds of responses. While this can be funny or profound among more experienced Reddit users, it can be difficult to suss out for some. Some communities have a comedy flair that gets around this, but not all communities do.
In the end, this aspect of Reddit is governed less by moderators and more by results. If your navigation of flair allows you to find the kind of posts that you want to see, you’re using it correctly. If your use of flair on your own posts gets the kind of responses that you’re trying to get, then you’re using it correctly.
Use Reddit Flair With Confidence
At its heart, “flair” is just “tagging”. Of course it works differently on Reddit, but don’t let that scare you away from exploring it. Like everything else on the platform, it starts to make sense the more you dive in.
