With many storylines to keep up with among the franchise’s manyNCISspinoff shows, it’s almost impossible to know which will be the most compelling. On one hand, the originalNCISoffers a complex narrative due to the series' massive 21-year presence on television. On the other hand,newerNCISspinoffs have more characters at the beginning of their story development, making for fascinating viewing. I find that some of the most enthrallingNCISrelationships are in the shows' earliest seasons because, as an audience member, you are learning the character for the first time, which is immersive.

While many have their sights set onwhat happened with Knight and Palmer’sNCISseason 22 breakup,I have my sights set on a relationship yet to develop. Don’t get me wrong; I can’t wait to see how the flagship resolves what happened to Jessica Knight. However, I’m as excited about the newer beginnings for the characters ofNCIS: Sydney.In season 1, Evie and DeShawn had a will they/won’t they relationship. The romance intensified in season 1, episode 7, “Bunker Down,” when Evie is trapped inside a decommissioned bunker without oxygen and records her final words to DeShawn.
InNCIS: Sydneyseason 1, episode 7, “Bunker Down,” Evie, Mackey, and Blue attend a tech release party in a sealed underground bunker without connection to the outside world. It’s later revealed Ana Neimus is blocking their only connection.
If anything, it was a little bit dramatic, considering Evie and DeShawn never shared a kiss or anything like that, but that makes it all the more worth anticipating in season 2. If Evie wanted her last words to be to DeShawn, of all people, she must have intense feelings for him, and I am curious to see how it plays out. While there are many otherNCISromances worth looking forward to, in series likeNCIS: Origins,I’m more curious about how the franchise will handle moments likewhat happened to Gibbs' family inNCIS.
Why Evie And DeShawn’s Relationship Could Be One Of The Most Complicated Yet
Evie And DeShawn Come From Different Backgrounds
Evie and DeShawn’s relationship could be one of the most complicated becausetheNCIS: Sydneycharacters come from entirely different backgrounds. Evie Cooper is a Constable with the Australian Federal Police, and DeShawn Jackson was an NCIS Agent Afloat before the AFP/NCIS Sydney task force. As such, Evie and DeShawn have different mannerisms based on their cultural background, which could cause the agents to misunderstand one another. Evie is more brash in season 1 than DeShawn and constantly antagonizes him. Still, the agents are good friends, and it’s the beginning of an exciting romance.
The AFP/NCIS Sydney Task Force was established inNCIS: Sydneyseason 1, episode 1, “Gone Fission,” after Mackey and JD worked together to thwart an assault on Sydney Harbor.
Moreover, the relationship could be one of the most complicated becausethe AFP/NCIS Sydney Task Force feels more temporary than manyNCISteams, giving Evie and DeShawn’s romance a sense of urgency but also a sense that it can’t last. This could be why neither Evie nor DeShawn acted on their feelings in season 1 in a way the other could recognize, because they know they come from entirely different walks of life. It would be complicated if the task force was disbanded and Evie and DeShawn had to part ways, but that could also make it exciting.

I believe the series depends on it because theNCIS: Sydneycast is still growing among someNCISfans, and they all need more time together to establish the show. Currently, prominentNCIS: Sydneycast members are expected to return. While Evie wasn’t my favorite character early on in season 1, I can’t wait to see her return after she began to develop at the season’s end. Her character started to evolve after initially seeming one-dimensional early on.

The rest of theNCIS: Sydneycast membersare also expected to return, and I’m equally excited about every cast member’s role in the series. It’s even believed that Georgina Haig will likely return as Ana Neimus and Lewis Fitz-Gerald as Colonel Rankin, who was connected to the mysterious criminal. While Georgina Haig was chilling as the central villain, I would be excited to see her return, especially after the stunt she pulled in the finale. Seeing Evie go head-to-head with Ana in season 2 would be awesome. I’m sure Sagar’s character will reprise his position as Evie’s partner.

The end ofNCIS: Sydneyseason 1 set up Evie and DeShawn’s romance to take off in season 2. The characters were constantly together in season 1, putting them in dangerous situations where they saved each other’s lives several times. I also see a potential relationship between JD and the supervisory agent, Michelle Mackey. Still, sinceMackey keeps her past secret inNCIS: Sydney,she couldn’t open up to JD enough for something to start. In contrast, the relationship between Evie and DeShawn gained momentum after Evie was kidnapped in season 1, episode 6, “Extraction.”

The most significant moment for the agents was inNCIS: Sydneyseason 1, episode 7, “Bunker Down,” when Evie left DeShawn a voice memo that he could find on her phone if she died. It was an apology for eating his pizza, saying that she only did it so they could return to what they had beforeEvie punched him in episode 6 to keep DeShawn from blowing her cover. The episode also introduced Evie’s ex, her former undercover partner, but there were signs that she preferred DeShawn, like when she goes to him first after she is safe.
It’s hard to say where Evie and DeShawn’s relationship will pick up inNCIS: Sydneyseason 2. After Evie was rescued, she deleted the voice memo to DeShawn and continued to tease his character. That’s how Evie keeps her guard up. It could be that she’s protecting herself after previously getting involved with a partner, implied in episode 6, which blew the operation. Still, I hope we can see more of Evie’s character as she opens up to DeShawn. It’s never just about the crimes inNCIS– crimes of love keep the show in viewers' hearts and minds.
