It was inevitable that theStar Warsgalaxy would change after the fall of the Empire, but one major shift is genuinely surprising:it seems like the Bounty Hunters’ Guild is on the verge of collapse.ThoughStar Wars’New Republic-era storytelling has been mostly confined to Disney+, it’s no less grand. The galaxy’s major conflict may no longer be focused on the Rebellion vs. the Empire, but there’s still danger aplenty.

Bounty hunters and pirates have taken over the majority ofStar Wars’New Republic narrative, from Din Djarin and Greef Karga inThe Mandalorian, Fennec Shand and Boba Fett inThe Book of Boba Fett, and Jod Na Nawood and other pirates likeThe Mandalorian’s Vane inStar Wars: Skeleton Crew. Sowhy is theBounty Hunters’ Guildseemingly struggling to maintain its ranks, despite the galaxy’s power vacuum? The Imperial Remnant is currently still hiding in the shadows, after all.

Star Wars' Latest Bounty Hunter Threw Shade At The Guild

Bounty Hunters have been a staple ofStar Warsstorytelling since the beginning – that’s why we were officially introduced to Boba Fett inThe Empire Strikes Back– but the concept of the Bounty Hunters’ Guild didn’t become truly significant until shows likeThe MandalorianandStar Wars: The Bad Batchcame along. Though the Guild’s rules are still somewhat vague, we do know they follow a specific code that promotes professionalism, initiates need to complete a bounty before being admitted, and there are differentranks and levels bounty hunterscan achieve.

Interestingly enough, however, it appears a few prominent bounty hunters are tiring of the Guild’s rules. InStar Wars: Skeleton Crewepisode 5, “You Have a Lot to Learn About Pirates,” a new bounty hunter named Pokkit approaches Jod Na Nawood – though she knows him by yet another alias, Dash Zentin – and tells him what she’s been up to since he left her“drowning in a pit of leeches.”She explains that she’s left the Bounty Hunters’ Guild and now works for a private client, having eschewed the“low-rent Guild jobs”she was subjected to.

Star Wars' Most Interesting Group Isn’t The Jedi—And It’s Time For Them To Get Their Own Show

One major group in Star Wars still hasn’t gotten its own TV show, but it certainly deserves one based on the group’s popularity and unique nature.

This suggests that Pokkit – and perhaps other affiliated Guild members – are tired of the Guild’s strict regulations and low pay, and are possibly looking to strike out on their own. Pokkit is working for a private client and presumably earning much more money, and she’s not the only bounty hunter known to have left the Guild behind for good.

Din Djarin’s Now Working For Exclusive Clients Too

The Mandalorian’s Din Djarin was once a member of the Guild, too. Famously, of course, that’s how he developed his alliance with Greef Karga and found and protected the youngling Grogu once he realized the remains of the Empire were after him for nefarious experiments. Since then, Din has also officially left the Guild behind him, choosing to focus on his time with Grogu and finding a more stable – though perhaps not necessarily safer – way to earn an income.

Din Djarin has turned his life around to such an extent that he’s now working as what can only be described as an independent contractor for the New Republic. Though we haven’t seen him in action in this role yet, we’ll undoubtedly see more of it whenThe Mandalorian & Groguis finally released in cinemas.Din and Grogu have settled down on Nevarro, leaving the dangerous and demanding world of the Bounty Hunters’ Guild behind them.

Even Greef Karga Left The Bounty Hunting Trade

Alongside Din Djarin, Greef Karga also abandoned the Guild, though his departure was perhaps even more dramatic than Din’s or Pokkit’s. Greef was a Guild Master, after all, a leader of the Bounty Hunters’ Guild and head honcho of the Nevarro Hunters. He killed his bounty hunters to save Din, Grogu, and Cara Dune inThe Mandalorianseason 1, eventually taking on the High Magistrate position for Nevarro, turning the formerly lawless planet into a reputable trading outpost and a haven for families.

Of course, in Din and Greef’s cases, they left the Guild for personal reasons – neither could truly stand the work anymore and decided to do something more rewarding with their lives. Din took in Grogu and cared for him as if he was his own, and Greef built a school and changed Nevarro for the better. Pokkit, however, was undoubtedly annoyed with the Guild’s hierarchy and low-paying jobs, opting to work for a private client instead.

If the Guild falls apart, and the galaxy’s bounties become free-for-all, will everyone truly be better off in the long run inStar Wars?

The fact that these bounty hunters chose to leave the Guild speaks volumes.Hunters seem to be losing trust in the Guild’s process, opting to strike out on their own once they’ve garnered a strong enough reputation or leaving the life of a bounty hunter altogether. What does this mean for the future of bounty hunting as a profession? At the very least, the Guild does operate under a strict code. If it falls apart, and the galaxy’s bounties become free-for-all, will everyone truly be better off in the long run inStar Wars?
