Summary
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Powermade a massive retcon by removing an important character, but it’s officially confirmed that he will return in future episodes.Screen Rantwas in attendance at theRings of Powerpanel at theSan Diego Comic-Con 2024, where the showrunners and cast talked about what was to come in the Prime Video series. This came with a lot of exciting teases, especially regarding season 2. One such tidbit looks as if it won’t come about in this next installment but confirms that audiences can expect thisLord of the Ringscharacter down the road (thank goodness).
By theevents ofRings of Powerseason 1, Galadriel is supposed to be married with an adult daughter. However, she shared in these first episodes that her husband, Celeborn, was killed during the War of Wrath. This was quite a surprise since the character is obviously alive and well duringThe Lord of the Rings. While the Prime Video series has made a variety of changes to canon, none would have such a substantial impact on the events of the Third Age as this. Naturally,Celeorn’s apparent death has led to some confusion, butRings of Power’s showrunners have subtly cleared things up.

During theRings of Powerpanel at the San Diego Comic-Con, leading up to the June 09, 2025, release of season 2, showrunners J. D. Payne and Patrick McKay gave a short and sweet confirmation thatGaladriel’s marriage problem would be solved—“Celeborn will be back, don’t worry.“This confirms that the elf is either not dead at all (likely) or will return to Middle-earth from Valinor, where he would have been resurrected. While it appears that this won’t be happening inRings of Poterseason 2, we can rest assured that Prime Video doesn’t plan to leave Celeborn out indefinitely.

Rings Of Power Couldn’t Kill Celeborn Off For Good
Celebron’s absence inThe Rings of Powerseason 1led to debate regarding whether the series was really going so far as to kill off aLord of the Ringscharacter.Celeborn is meant to be alive and well by Galadriel’s side during the Third Age of Middle-earthwhenThe Lord of the Ringsis set. Frodo and the gang meet him inFellowship of the Ringwhen they come to Lothlórien following Gandalf’s fall in Moria. While Prime Video hasn’t shied away from making adjustments to the Second Age, this would have been taking things a little too far.
Thankfully, it seems thatRings of Power’s showrunners intend to restore Celeborn, therefore fixing the canon change before the events ofThe Lord of the Rings. As far as how and when the series will do this, we can only speculate. Payne and McKay gave no indication that Celeborn would return in season 2 since they said he would “be back"while discussing the many canon characters that would make appearances throughout the entire series. It’s possible that they will keep Galadriel’s husband out of the way until the final season, focusing on other aspects of her development instead.

Celeborn and Galadriel’s daughter, Celebrian, has yet to be mentioned byRings of Power’s showrunners.
What Celeborn’s Return Means For Galadriel
Celeborn Will Be A Step Forward For Galadriel’s Story
The return of Galadriel’s husband would mean a significant step in her development. She and Celeborn were the leaders of Lothlórien inThe Lord of the Ringsand successfully kept the Elves under their dominion safe for centuries. While Galadriel is all over Middle-earth inRings of Powerseason 1, fighting battles and working to find and stop Sauron, we know that Lothlórien is where she will ultimately end up. The destination is set, but the big question is how she will get there and where Celeborn fits in with all of this.
The destination is set, but the big question is how she will get there and where Celeborn fits in with all of this.

TheSDCC trailer forThe Rings of Powerseason 2sees Galadriel put on her Ring, Nenya, for the first time, and her voice is heard stating that the powerful tool is guiding her forward. Nenya is how Galadriel kept Lothlórien and its people protected, so the Ring could be directing her toward this destiny. Nenya may be leading her to Celeborn before turning them both toward Lothlórien. Slowly but surely, Galadriel is finding her place in Middle-earth inRings of Power. Her journey may look different than expected, butCeleborn’s return means she will eventually become theLord of the Ringscharacter we know and love.
