For members of the Bat Family, striking out on solo adventures often signals the end of a character’s era. By giving Cassandra her own series, andmoving her onto the elite Birds of Prey team,DC has declared that Cassandra Cain is finally ready to take a more adult place in the DC Universe. This place was confirmed when Black Canary recruited Cass for her team inBirds of Prey#1 by Kelly Thompson, Leonardo Romero, Jordie Bellaire, and Clayton Cowles.

Batgirl Cassandra Cain Embarks on a New Solo Journey

Where Does the NewBatgirlSeries Leave Stephanie Brown?

It’s genuinely interesting to see Cassandra Cain striking out on her own, especially after the conclusion ofBatgirlsby Becky Cloonan, Michael W. Conrad, and Jorge Corona, whichstarred Cassandra and fellow Batgirl Stephanie Brown as a duo under the guidance of the original Batgirl, Barbara Gordon. Both girls held the moniker and supported their city through triumphs and losses in many recent DC events, includingJoker War,Dark Crisis, andGotham War. Instead of competing for the title, Stephanie and Cassandra chose to bear it together.

Cassandra Cain isn’t the newest kid on the block anymore: 2024 marks the 25th anniversary of her first appearance.

To carry the Batgirl name solo now speaks a great deal to Cass’ development as a character and to the work DC has done to move her out of Gotham’s shadow. Cass is finally ready to strike out on her own, without a team and without a partner. With Cass flying solo, that leaves room for Stephanie to find herself in much the same way as her former partner.Hopefully DC will reveal plans for Stephanie Brown soon, as it would be remiss to waste her fan-favorite character.

Cassandra Cain isn’t the newest kid on the block anymore: 2024 marks the 25th anniversary of her first appearance. It’s the perfect time for an update, and it’s a change that’s been a long time coming. As one of the most influential members of the Bat Family, and one of the best fighters in superhero history, DC could finally giveCassandra Cainthe reset asBatgirlthat she deserves.
