Summary
Din Djarin(Pedro Pascal)’s helmet has long since been central to the story ofThe Mandalorian, but things took an unexpected turn in season 3 that made it seem as if everything related to his helmet would be closed off for good - and this is not the case.TheMandalorianseasons 1 and 2 often present Din Djarin’s helmet rule, which forbids him from removing his helmet in front of other living things, as an obstacle, with him even almost dying because of this rule on one occasion. By the end of season 2, Din has broken this rule twice.
This, paired with the fact that Din had metBo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff)and her fellow Mandalorians who don’t adhere to this rule, made it seem as if he would challenge the helmet rule for good. The Mandalorianseason 3, however, took an unexpected turn and doubled down on Din’s helmet rule, instead seeing him earn redemption for his “sin” of removing it and becoming the first installment of the series to keep his face concealed for its entirety. This has left many viewers hopeless about a revival of this storyline, butStar Warswill have to return to it.

The Mandalorian: Din Djarin’s Full Timeline, Backstory, & Star Wars Future Explained
The Mandalorian’s Din Djarin has quickly become one of Star Wars' most iconic characters. Here’s his full timeline, backstory, and future explained.
Grogu Can’t Get A Mandalorian Helmet
Concealing His Face Would Ruin The Story
The surprising reason why Din Djarin’s own helmet arc will have to return is because ofGrogu. Ironically,The Mandalorianseason 3 has set itself up for this in-universe, as it’s explained by both Din andthe Armorer(Emily Swallow) that Grogu cannot swear the Creed and get his Mandalorian helmet because he cannot talk. This means that, in theory,Grogu will get his helmet once he can talk. It’s clear thatThe Mandalorianwill see Grogu speak soon, given how many times it’s foreshadowed inThe Mandalorianseason 3 - butStar Warscan’t afford to hide Grogu’s face.
The dynamic between Din Djarin and Grogu works because Grogu’s expressiveness is a perfect contrast to the empty image of Din’s helmet.

It’s been said by the cast and crew ofThe Mandalorianthat the dynamic between Din Djarin and Grogu worksbecause Grogu’s expressiveness is a perfect contrast to the empty image of Din’s helmet. ShouldThe Mandaloriangive Grogu his helmet, then, this dynamic would no longer work. Both characters would have their faces concealed, and no longer would one help to represent the other. Even worse is the fact thatStar Wars, and Disney, have long since been capitalizing on Grogu’s sheer adorableness. This is something they cannot afford to lose.
Grogu
Grogu is a former Jedi youngling who is now training as a Mandalorian apprentice under his adopted father, Din Djarin. A survivor of Order 66, Grogu was hunted by the Empire for his blood amidst their cloning experimentation. Rescued by Din after initially being his bounty, Grogu went on to be trained briefly by Luke Skywalker as a Jedi Padawan, but has ultimately chosen the path of the Mandalorians instead to remain with his father. Grogu is now traversing the galaxy with Din to fight the Imperial Remnant and learn the Mandalorian Way.
Din Djarin Will Have To Reckon With This
There Needs To Be An In-Universe Explanation Behind This Decision
Seeing asThe Mandalorianlogistically cannot put a helmet on Grogu, they will have to come up with an in-universe explanation as to why - meaning Din Djarin will have to reckon with this helmet rule all over again. As of right now, Din is expecting that his son, and apprentice, will swear the Creed once he can speak it and will then receive his helmet. Between now and then, something will have to change for Din to be okay with Grogu not donning a helmeteven when he can speak.
This won’t be easy for Din to accept. The Mandalorianseason 3 proved the lengths to which Din was willing to go to earn his own redemption regarding his helmet in the eyes of his people. It’s a key part of his religion, all that he’s known ever since the tragedy on Aq Vetina that first placed him into the Mandalorians' care. Grogu’s inability or lack of desire to wear a helmet will thus shake Din to his core more than anything else, and it will no doubt bring his questioning of the helmet rule back again.

Din Djarin
Din Djarin was once a lone bounty who has since tasked himself with raising his adopted son and Mandalorian apprentice, Grogu. Born on Aq Vetina and raised on Concordia by the Mandalorian faction the Children of the Watch, Din is an orphan and Mandalorian foundling who has risked both his life and his Mandalorian Creed to protect Grogu. Djarin has become an important part of the galaxy’s fight against the Imperial Remnant that lingers in the wake of the Empire’s fall, as he is now working under-the-table for the fledgling New Republic’s rangers.
Star Wars' Mandalorian Timeline & History Explained
As the greatest warriors in the Star Wars galaxy, Mandalorians have a rich and expanding history, and this is their full timeline in canon explained.
Din Djarin’s Helmet Arc Has To Return
Din Has To Question This Rule To Be Okay With Grogu Breaking It
One thing that’s become glaringly apparent about Din Djarin’s character over time is that he becomes more willing to cross lines for Grogu than he is for anyone or anything else.Grogu’s the reason why Din even broke his Creed by removing his helmet twice in the first place, once to save his son and another time just to comply with his request to see his father. If it’s Grogu who’s questioning the helmet rule for some reason, then there’s no doubt Din is actually going to take it into consideration this time. It’s exactly the kind of nudge Din needs.
If it’s Grogu who’s questioning the helmet rule for some reason, then there’s no doubt Din is actually going to take it into consideration this time.

It’s clear now thatThe Mandalorianmay have been delaying Din’s helmet arc rather than dropping it all along. Season 3 had a lot of ground to cover, and it simply could have been that Din’s helmet arc was supposed to continue alongside Grogu’s own. It would certainly fit the pattern of his character that he would wait until it affected Grogu to do some true, impactful reflection. Knowing that the Armorer has accepted Mandalorians without helmets will also facilitate this storyline. It’s not impossible that the future ofThe Mandaloriancould see more of Din Djarin’s face, after all.
