Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Joe Kessler in The Boys season 4 in frfont of a blurred out iimage of a woman and man

Butcher realizing that CIA agent Joe Kessler has been a hallucination and part of his subconsciousness all season long, understandably makes Kojima eager to see the next episode.Kessler being a part of Butcher recontextualizes much of season 4so far and adds further complications to the story moving forward.

What Butcher’s Discovery About Kessler Means For The Boys' Future

The Devil On Butcher’s Shoulder Is Strong.

Butcher unleashing a genocide that kills Ryan would break the promise he made to Becca as she died.

TheFight Club-inspired ending twistproves thatThe Boysis still very much about the battle for Butcher’s soul. Butcher’s hallucinations of Becca seemed to be guiding him earlier in season 4, but now, the hallucinations of Kessler seem to hold more power over him. The devil is becoming more powerful than the angel on Butcher’s shoulder as his looming death approaches, offering Butcher a chance at getting his long-awaited revenge against Homelander.

The Boys Season 4’s Massive Joe Kessler Twist Explained

The Boys season 4 introduces Butcher’s old friend, Joe Kessler, but it also throws a curveball when it comes to Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s character.

If Kessler can convince Butcher to force Dr. Sameer Shah to create more of the supe-killing virus, the battle for Butcher’s soul may be lost. As Sameer explained inThe Boysseason 4, episode 6, to make the virus strong enough to kill Homelander, it would become airborne to anyone with Compound V in their blood. This means not only the end of Homelander, but the end of Ryan, Starlight, Kimiko, and even Butcher, who has Compound V flowing through his bloodstream.

As destructive as Butcher can be, it seems unlikely that this is how season 4 and the series will play out.The Boyscharacterunleashing a genocide that kills Ryan would break the promise he made to Becca as she died. Butcher generally believes the ends justify the means, but not even he can justify killing Ryan and knowingly failing to honor Becca’s dying words. The angel on Butcher’s shoulder needs to be strongerthan the devil asThe Boysseason 4 nears its end.
