Summary

James Gunn’sSupermancan finally improve on an essential part of the hero’s character that past films have struggled with. As more details emerge about the impendingDCUSupermanmovie, the more promising it becomes. Based onearly costume reveals of David Corenswet’s Superman, the film promises a fresh take on the character, while paying homage to his comic book and cinematic past. What also separates this adaptation from previous entries is how Gunn will emphasizethe DCU Clark Kentand his career at the Daily Planet, along with his team of journalists.

The Daily Planet roster has recently been rounded out with a cast that includes Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant, and Christopher McDonald as Ron Troupe. While it’s unclear how involved these characters will be, it’s a welcome departure from the DCEU, where The Daily Planet didn’t factor much into Superman’s life. Based on recent set photos, Gunn can improve on the Daily Planet and, possibly, make it the best part of theupcoming DC movie.

The Daily Planet Team Could Be The Best Part Of Superman

The DCU’s debut movie has been in production for several months, and unsurprisingly, manySupermanset photoshave emerged during the filming process. Many photos include Superman walking around the city in his costume, and encountering characters like Edi Gathegi’s Mister Terrific. One series of photos shows the Daily Planet crew emerging from what looks like an alien structure, though this is theorized to potentially be the T-Sphere ship. The cast is sporting outfits similar to their comic book counterparts, with Bennett rocking Steve Lombard’s mustache, and Hoover wearing Cat Grant’s iconic glasses and blonde hair.

It’s excellent to see the filmmaking team paying close attention to how these characters look, but it’s also intriguing to see the whole crew involved in what could be an action sequence involving an intergalactic threat. The Daily Planet team typically doesn’t do much outside of the office, and these photos suggest they could be involved inSupermanmore than audiences expect. It also shows thatGunn seemingly wants The Daily Planet crew to be an essential part of this film, giving Kal-El more chance to balance his life as Clark Kent and Superman.

James Gunn Is Excellent At Highlighting Minor Comic Book Characters In Team Settings

Another reason The Daily Planet has so much promise is that Gunn is a master at making minor comic book characters shine in team settings. Casual audiences didn’t know who theGuardians of the Galaxywere before the 2014 film. Not only did Gunn make these characters household names, but he also made audiences fall in love with them as a group. They’re all great individually, butthey truly shine when working together, showing off their hilarious, lovable dynamic. The same can be said for 2021’sThe Suicide Squad, albeit in a more mature, darker tone.

Gunn can do this again with The Daily Planet team, taking characters who are normally small parts of Superman’s story and making them more memorable by giving them a larger role. The cast itself is excellent, with actors known for their comedic and dramatic talents, like Bennett, Gisondo, Pierce, and Brosnahan. The Daily Planet could have a small role inSuperman, but it’s exciting to see that Gunn isn’t taking this part of Superman’s life lightly.
