Summary
Suitsseason 9 featured a controversial Harvey Specter plot that ended up making me like his character even more. While Harvey had always been front and center inSuits, he became even more important after the exits of Mike, Rachel, and Jessica. Now that the Harvey and Mike interactions were no more,Suitshad to change how it approached its main character. Rather than just the“best closer in the city”who would go from case to case, Harvey was now responsible for runningSuits' Specter Littalongside Lewis.
Harvey had a lot to deal with at the firm between seasons 8 and 9, from everything that happened to Robert Zane to the arrival of Faye Richardson. However, his personal life was also getting quite complicated.Harvey’s feelings for Donnahad become more obvious than ever, and he could no longer run away from his past. This led toone ofSuits’ most controversial storylines – Harvey forgiving his motherafter decades and becoming close to her again despite everything that had happened.

Harvey Forgiving His Mother In Suits Season 9 Was Controversial
Harvey Called His Mother At The End of “Scenic Route”
Harvey Specter forgives his mother inSuitsseason 9, episode 7, “Scenic Route” after helping Samantha find out who her parents are. While the episode is mainly focused on Samantha and her past, it ends with Harvey realizing that he has the chance to fix things with his mother before it’s too late. Whereas Samantha’s dad did not even know she existed, Harvey still had the chance of working things out with Lily. After going back to New York,Harvey calls Lily and tells his mother he forgives her while also apologizing himself.
Harvey had all the right to be upset with his mother and not want to be close to her again, regardless of how she or his brother felt about it.

Harvey forgiving his mother was so controversial becauseSuitshad spent several episodes establishing how much Lily cheating on her husband affected their oldest son.Harvey found out his mother was constantly cheating on his fatheras a kid and did not know what to do about it. Afraid he was going to destroy their family but feeling guilty for not letting his father know the truth, Harvey grew up in pain because of what his mother did.Suitsoriginally framed what Harvey’s mom did as unforgivable, yet it later tried to redeem her character.
Harvey Reconnecting With His Mother Before She Died Made His Character Better
I understand why manySuitsfans have a problem with Harvey forgiving Lilly. Not only did Harvey Specter reconnect with his mother, but he also apologized as if he was partially to blame for what happened to their family. Harvey had all the right to be upset with his mother and not want to be close to her again, regardless of how she or his brother felt about it. Therefore,Suitssometimes framing Harvey as the one doing something wrong felt strange. That said, I’m happy he forgave his mother.
Harvey’s mother dies inSuitsseason 9, episode 8.
Harvey Specter, the character who would rarely talk about his feelings and could turn anything into a heated argument, forgiving someone who had hurt him deeply made for a cathartic scene. Even thoughHarvey did not really need to apologize, the fact he was able to forgive his mother shortly before she died was one of thebest things aboutSuitsseason 9. What Lily Specter did was not erased, and the time Harvey spent away from his family would never be recovered, but at least they managed to reconnect in the end.
Harvey’s Trauma & Mental Health Were A Huge Part Of Suits
Harvey Was A More Complex Character Than We Originally Thought
Harvey became a more complex character in laterseasons ofSuits, with the show now focusing on his childhood trauma and mental health in general. After Donna left Harvey and went to work for Louis, he began to consult with a therapist following multiple panic attacks. Harvey’s feelings for Donna were only a small part of a broader range of things he had yet to confront, the biggest of them being his relationship with his mother. Harvey’s behavior and why he had yet to commit to a relationship all traced back to his experiences with his family.
Suitsseason 9 endedwith Harvey Specter being a far more mature character compared to the one who hired Mike Ross back in the pilot. This is why I was not surprised to see Harvey leave the firm to work with Mike and Rachel at their clinic in Seattle, even though he had always bragged about playing in the major leagues.Suits’ final two seasons may not have been the show’s best, but they at least confirmed gave Harvey a solid character arc. As controversial as Harvey forgiving his mother was, it added to his character’s growth.
