Seriousness simply doesn’t exist when entering the mind of Patrick in a game likeSpongeBob SquarePants: The Patrick Star Game.I immediately knew that this physics-based adventure by PHL Collective would be a very silly and fun time. Featuring the familiar bright colors and animation style which perfectly matches the feel of the popularSpongeBob SquarePantsseries,The Patrick Star Gamefeels as though you are running around inside the show itself.

ThisSpongeBob SquarePantsgame focuses on Patrick, with players taking control of the cheerful friend tocompete in challenges and minigamesaround the area. A day in the life of Patrick can include anything from driving delivery vehicles to hungry citizens of Bikini Bottom or visiting Glove World to ride a roller coaster. Whether someone is familiar with theSpongeBob SquarePantsworld or not, this game offers a plethora of just pure joy and smiles.

SpongeBob SquarePants The Patrick Star Game Patrick rolling through Bikini Bottom

Control Patrick Star In This Silly Physics-Based Game

Rolling Through Bikini Bottom Feels Surprisingly Normal

Although it certainly doesn’t have the feeling of many physics-based games that take the chaotic flopping around to an extreme,The Patrick Star Gamedoes have many aspects where physics comes into play. At any point, players can press a button to have Patrick just flop to his side and players can then roll him anywhere they want to go, which is quicker than walking but presents its own comical challenges. However, controlling Patrick while rolling and using the physics aspect of the game was surprisingly smooth and well-balanced, considering.

Most of the time I played, I did not use this rolling feature but chose to either walk or drive any of the cars available for Patrick to jump in and control. The physics aspect also comes into play in many of the minigames, including riding jellyfish or driving delivery vehicles to hungry customers. There are many items which Patrick can equipthat utilize many of the physics in the game, like trying to fly through the air with some wings and crashing helplessly into the ground instead.

Sadly, sometimes these physics can also present some challenges. Trying to line up a ladder against a building became frustratingly difficult, and there were many times when the game seemed to get stuck with Patrick in a constant state of falling despite standing on normal ground. These, and some other issues that came up during gameplay, are reportedlygoing to be corrected with a patch at launch, yet it would not surprise me if more physics-related problems arose.

Minigames Throughout The World Make The Game Something Special

A Large Variety Of Things To Do

Essentially,The Patrick Star Gameis a series of minigames. There is no real overarching story campaign to complete, but it really is more of a day in the life of Patrick as he chooses what to do. The map is fairly large with different areas to explore, andthe variety of minigames keeps things from ever becoming boring. Players can spend their time searching for buried treasure in the dump, shooting coconuts at boxes, completing art challenges against Squidward, or virtually anything else someone can think of.

SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake Review - A Fun Platformer For All Ages

SpongeBob and Patrick visit alternate worlds to save Bikini Bottom and their friends in this classic style 3D platformer filled with humor and charm.

Personally, my favorite area in the game was the iconic Glove World. Here, Patrick can ride the park attractions, including the large rollercoaster, and hop around to each of the traditional carnival-like minigame booths in the area. The entire game is a vibrant and happy experience, butsomehow Glove World makes it even more joyful and I couldn’t stop smilingthe entire time I was in the area.

Fun Outfits And Extra Feats Add To The Experience

Finding Mayo Jars And More Is A Fun Extra

Some side objectives in the game are the Feats in each of the respective areas around the map. These can include things such as finding hidden items, including Mayo jars, or achieving high scores in some of the minigames. Meeting these objectives awards Patrick more Sand Dollars, and are just extra achievements to shoot for while playing. Finding all the hidden items in each location was a lot of fun for me, althoughI can see how it could become a bit repetitive or tedious for some players with the amount of hidden items required to findin the game.

10 Best SpongeBob SquarePants Games, Ranked

SpongeBob SquarePants is an animated icon with many game titles to prove it, but which are the best that newbie players should check out first?

Throughout the game, there are several costumes that Patrick unlocks after completing certain games or challenges. Players can then dress Patrick in these outfits for a little added silliness, although they offer no gameplay benefit. It does seem thematically appropriate for Patrick to wear his Glove World outfit while riding the rollercoaster though.

6/10: Family Fun, Though Not Without Flaws

Fans ofSpongeBob SquarePantswill love being able to explore Bikini Bottom and talking with so many familiar characters in the world, including helping SpongeBob himself in many activities. Whether you’re a fan of the show or not, however, I can see how this would still be an entertaining game for anyone who wants a joyful game that will make them laugh.

Though the controls could be difficult for young children due to the physics involved,SpongeBob SquarePants: The Patrick Star Gameis designed to be fun for everyone, and it would certainly be hard to be depressed while in this bright world.
