Summary
Spawncreator Todd McFarlane has provided some more insight into the long-awaited movie reboot at San Diego Comic-Con 2024, but has also provided an answer surrounding whether he’d ever be interested in a new video game involving the character, especially with Blumhouse recently moving into the gaming space.Blumhouse is currently developing the newSpawnmovie adaptation, now retitled asKing Spawn, and a new script by Matt Mixon, Malcolm Spellman, and Scott Silver has recently been teased by McFarlane at SDCC, who called it a “bold” and “different” R-rated take that remains true to his spirit withJamie Foxx playing the lead role.
Now, in an interview withIGN,McFarlane responded to the question of whether or not he wants anotherSpawnvideo game with an emphatic “Sure, I do!“However, McFarlane has noted how he has “intentionally been holding back in certain categories” until there’s a launch that he considers to be big and meaningful enough. To do this, McFarlane stated it needed to be tied to either a movie or TV reboot to break out of the “comic book bubble” and get more “global” with the brand, citing Robert Kirkman’sThe Walking Deadas an example of a comic that saw a huge increase in brand recognition with the launch of AMC’s TV series.

McFarlane went on to explain that once theKing Spawnmovie is settled - which he hopes will be in the next few months - there will be a product line covering other areas, such as video games, as it will be easier to sell to fans who have been around forever, and then the newer audiences who are just discovering the character.
Mortal Kombat 11: Spawn Fatalities & Brutalities Guide
Mortal Kombat 11 added Spawn to the game in the form of DLC. Here’s a guide to his fatalities and brutalities special moves in the game.
It’s Been Nearly Two Decades Since The Last Spawn Game
Although The Character Has Since Appeared In Mortal Kombat
This wouldn’t be Spawn’s first foray into the world of gaming, asthe character had several games in the ’90s and early 2000s across various platforms. This ranged from the SNES’Todd McFarlane’s Spawn: The Video Gamein 1995, which featured side-scrolling beat ‘em up gameplay and saw Spawn trying to save the lives of thirteen children from The Mad One, including his own stepdaughter, through to the 3D action-adventure hack and slash titleSpawn: Armageddonon the PlayStation 2, Xbox and Nintendo GameCube in 2003, which was inspired by the first 99 issues of the comics.
Therefore, with nearly 21 years having passed since the release ofSpawn: Armageddon, McFarlane’s tactic of waiting until a movie brings the character more into the mainstream spotlight again could be the wise choice. There’s no doubt that Spawn is an incredibly popular character - and he was recently featured as aplayable character inMortal Kombat11in 2020 to high praise - but an entire generation has reached adulthood in the time since the lastSpawngame was released, and it’s been even longer since the last movie in 1997 and the release of HBO’s popular animated series, which ran between 1997 and 1999, so the newKing Spawnmovie could be what the series needs to reach a larger, modern audience.
A newSpawnmovie has been in the works for quite some time now, and Blumhouse took the reins seven years ago, with many deeming the project as being in development hell. Still, McFarlane seems optimistic about this latest iteration and has stated that the release of more R-rated fare such as theJokerorDeadpoolmovies in recent years has made Hollywood more receptive to R-rated comic book movies, so hopefully,King Spawnwill be successful, and the franchise will see a boom once again.
