There are a ton of romance animes out there for anyone to watch. Some aren’t great, relying onoverused anime tropesto tell their stories in a way that isn’t too relatable to a general audience. Others, however, do their jobs perfectly. Theserealistic romance animeshave relatable characters, understandable motives, and plenty of solid moments anyone watching can feel companionship with.
Tsuki ga Kireiis one of those animes. It’s one of thebest romance seriesfor an anime-lover who is looking for something a little more grounded. It’s a simple, relatable story about Akane Mizuno and her love interest, Kotarō Azumi, as they navigate their final year of middle school, learn more about themselves and one another, and fall in love. It stands out from other romance anime series because of how well it portrays the nerves surrounding one’s first relationship. Everyone wants to fall in love and get into a great relationship, but asTsuki ga Kireiportrays, it isn’t always that simple.

Nerves Can Be Hard to Overcome
Especially When You’re an Introvert
Both Akane Mizuno, the female main character, and Kotarō Azumi, the male main character, are pretty introverted. They each have a great group of friends and are involved with their respective clubs, but they tend to keep to themselves. Their friends want them to get out of their shells a little more, but the two have a hard time until they meet one another. Once they get to know one another, they’re both able to be more themselves with each other and with their friends at school.
In a lot of romance anime, one of the two love interests is usually outgoing, brave, and an extrovert. InTsuki ga Kirei, both of the main characters have trouble expressing themselves in person. It’s a relatable story for many who were and still are nervous to express their romantic feelings to the person they have them for. It’s one of thebest romance anime series everfor how succinctly it portrays their main character’s nerves and their abilities to overcome them time after time.

Fruits Basket May Be a Great Romance Anime, But That’s Not Why I Love It
Fruits Basket has been my favorite romance anime of all time for years, and my reason for loving the series so much may seem surprising.
Nerves aren’t enough to stop them from falling in love, however, and that’s one of the story’s strongest points. Both characters have great moments where they realize they’re going to have to step up to the plate if they want to achieve their goals. Azumi bravely professed his love for Mizuno at the shrine, and when the two had a misunderstanding, Mizuno was there to press Azumi until he could tell her how he truly felt. Together, they’ll be able to overcome any problem.

Texting Is the Best When You’re 14
When You’re Too Nervous To Talk, Text
The advent of texting and instant messaging has changed the world of dating permanently. Now that anyone can message one another and chat while they’re not necessarily together, more people can keep in contact than ever.Tsuki ga Kireiperfectly conveys this new phenomenon. It shows the two main characters getting to know each other over text, or LINE as it’s known in Japan.
10 Best Romance Manhwa on Webtoon, Ranked
The best romance manhwas on Webtoon spark many feelings and occasional tears in the readers and are perfect when looking for the next binge-read.
It’s hard to express true emotions as an introverted 14-year-old, and both Azumi and Mizuno know that better than anyone. They start the series by exchanging a lot more messages than words in person, and it’s perfect. There aren’t many better romance series that convey the feeling of pure excitement one gets when they send a risky, heartfelt message to their crush, only to see the feeling reciprocated. Seeing Azumi jump for joy after Mizuno agrees to hang out, or even text him back, is absolutely adorable and entirely relatable.

LINE is huge is Japanfor this very reason. It’s an easy, quick way to talk to somebody without worrying about meeting up in person. For middle schoolers especially, it can be a great way of getting to know one another on a low-risk basis. Mizuno added Azumi on LINE after they were placed into the same group together in school, and they haven’t looked back since.
Relationships Are Complicated (Especially the First One)
Navigating Your First Relationship Isn’t Always Easy
Relationships, especially the first one someone is part of, can be complicated for both people involved.Neither person really knows how to express themselves, nor do they really know how to play the role of girlfriend/boyfriendwith their partner. It’s a guessing game filled with anxiety, andTsuki ga Kireidoes better than most other romance anime series in this category.
10 Best Anime Romances of Summer 2024
The summer anime season always introduces heavy hitters to fans, and this year, romance anime fans won out with a ton of great picks.
Tsuki ga Kireidoes great when showing how nervous Azumi is to send a text, or confess his feelings, and much more. It also shows how complicated things can get when other people are interested in your partner. Both Azumi and Mizuno had other people interested in them after they started dating, and while neither of them considered leaving one another, it certainly didn’t help their relationship. Mizuno had it harder in this area as one of her closest friends, Chinatsu, had a crush on Azumiand was willing to break them up to get what she wanted.

Mizuno also had one of her running club teammates confess his love to her. She was quick to turn him down, but Azumi wasn’t too happy seeing another man alone with his girlfriend, especially after it was very well known that he had a crush on her.

Tsuki ga Kireidoes a great job of portraying a real relationship. It’s never a straight line.
