Cantrall And Baker Break Down Their Characters In Descendants: The Rise Of Red
Screen Rant: It doesn’t seem like Red is a huge fan of being stuck in Wonderland, which is understandable. What is it like for her to be the daughter of the Queen of Hearts?
Kylie Cantrall: I think it’s a bit restrictive. I will say that. Just knowing Red and the kind of person that she is, I think she really likes to feel free and feel that she can just 100% be herself and do the things that she wants to do. I don’t think she has that leeway in Wonderland with her mom, especially. I think her Mom has her on a really tight leash. That’s just not fun for Red.

She wants to figure out her identity and figure out her own path, so I think in that way, Wonderland has kind of a negative taint in Red’s mind because she associates it with that restrictive boundary that her mom has set. It’s interesting seeing how she lets loose like in the Red music video at night when the people in the village go to sleep and the guards are monitoring around the courtyards and whatnot. She lets loose and puts that mask on. She’s like, “No one will know once I put this hoodie on and this mask.” She just goes crazy.
On the other side of things, Chloe is the daughter of Cinderella and Prince Charming. Malia, how do you feel that having these two figures as her parents has played into Chloe’s morals and values?

Malia Baker: Great question. I feel like Chloe sees the world as perfect and as this wonderland that she’s obsessed with. Her world literally is a fairy tale. When I was auditioning for Chloe, all I thought of was her mom and dad probably read her the story of Cinderella every night. So this is all that she knows. Like, “I’ll lose my shoe one day, and then I’ll have this happen to me, and it’s gonna be the exact same thing.”
I think that plays into this perfectionist mindset and this people-pleaser mindset of never wanting to do anyone wrong, and also this carefreeness of being at peace with who she is, which I think is really admirable. I think we can all take away from it a little bit, which is such a shell shock when she meets Red for the first time. She’s like, “This is the first person who hasn’t been welcoming to who I am and what I care about.”
Kylie Cantrall: And we do things so differently. We kind of shake up each other’s world and each other’s way of thinking.
Cantrall Was Excited To Reunite With High School Musical: The Musical: The Series Cast Mate
Kylie, you and Dara [Reneé] are bothHigh School Musical: The Musical: The Seriesalumni. How was getting to reunite to create another musical for Disney?
Kylie Cantrall: Oh, so special. I think it was so comforting coming from Salt Lake City where I was filming with Dara and then both of us being on the same plane ride to Atlanta to go film this. It was nice coming into it with her, especially since it was a musical project as well.
I think we were very much in that musical headspace. Dara is just the most talented ever. It’s such a joy working with her. We were the first to get cast. I remember texting her and just being so happy that she was involved in the project because I just adore her. She’s just brilliant in every way.
