Summary
The mutant era is finally starting to take shape in theMarvel Cinematic Universeas Kevin Feige confirms the beginning of a new chapter starting withDeadpool & Wolverine. As mutants have slowly started making their way into the MCU,Deadpool & Wolverinewill take it to a new level. With Ryan Reynolds coming back as Wade Wilson, he is seemingly joiningthe MCU timelineon a permanent basis, while other mutants from Fox’s X-Men franchise will also appear.
At theDeadpool & Wolverinepress conferenceScreen Rantattended, Feige opened up on the future of the mutants in the MCU. With the release ofDeadpool & Wolverine,Feige defines the film as"the beginning of"the mutant era in the MCU, sharing the following:

I think every [MCU] movie is important, and the most important thing is a great movie. […] So there’s nothing better for a cinematic universe than a great movie coming out. The before and after? I think a lot of people talk about the R-rating - ‘Is every [Marvel] movie going to be R-rated after this?’ Of course not. But I hope every movie after this embraces its tonality the way Deadpool does and the way this team was able to do on Deadpool & Wolverine. Also, the ‘after’ is clearly…Now that we have the characters from the X-Men world and the mutants, that we haven’t had access [to] before, I think this is the beginning of that, and everything post-Deadpool & Wolverine will be the mutant era coming into the MCU.

Will The X-Men Reboot Movie Happen During Or After The Multiverse Saga?
While a director has yet to be tapped,theX-Menmovie scriptis being written by Michael Lesslie, though Marvel Studios has yet to set a release date for the film. Even though mutants are becoming a bigger part of the MCU, it begs the question whetherX-Menis one of the films that may land a slot in Phase 6. It’s key to remember that Marvel Studios hasn’t announced all of their projects yet for Phase 6, which could mean something good forX-Men.
However, it wouldn’t be shocking if theX-Menreboot doesn’t happen until Phase 7, with many speculating that the next saga will be The Mutant Saga for the MCU. SinceAvengers: Secret Warsis rumored to lead to a soft reboot of the MCU, savingX-Menuntil afterThe Multiverse Sagamight be the wiser choice. With that in mind, the MCU could still plant the seeds for some of the iconic X-Men characters throughout the rest of Phases 5 and 6 before they headline theX-Menreboot.

SinceMarvel Studios is confirmed to attend San Diego Comic-Con 2024, Feige may offer some more updates on theX-Menmovie during the Hall H presentation. While the focus will definitely be on Phase 5, and most likely Phase 6, it would be shocking not to hear Feige bring up the X-Men in one way or another. For now, the MCU audience can get its X-Men fix inDeadpool & Wolverine, opening in theaters this week.
