I still think Jeffrey Dean Morgan’sSupernaturalreunion can — and should — happen inThe Boysseason 5, even if it looks very different from how I originally envisioned it. In season 4,The Boys' massive Kessler twistrevealed thatMorgan’s character was a figment of Butcher’s (Karl Urban) imagination. AlthoughJoe Kesslerappeared to his old war buddy on multiple occasions, none of the other members ofThe Boysseason 4’s cast of characterscould see him. This became increasingly clear as the show neared its finale — and as Butcher’s Temp V-caused tumor worsened his hallucinations.

In my opinion,The Boys' Kessler twist was obviousdue to the way it echoed Morgan’s well-knownGrey’s Anatomystory, so I’d given up on a traditionalSupernaturalreunion between Morgan’s Kessler and Jensen Ackles' Soldier Boy awhile ago. Before Eric Kripke developedThe Boysfor TV, he rose to prominence by creatingSupernatural, which starred Ackles and Jared Padalecki as demon-, ghost-, and monster-hunting brothers Dean and Sam Winchester. Notably, Morgan guest starred as the brothers' late father, John Winchester. With twoSupernaturalactors in the mix, they simply must share the screen beforeThe Boysends.

Kessler Will Return To Torment Butcher In The Boys' Final Season

ByThe Boysseason 4’s ending, it’s clear thatButcher’s Kessler hallucination is a manifestation of the Supe-hating vigilante’s guilt, anger, and darkest impulses. When Butcher hesitates to make decisions, his late wife, Becca (Shantel VanSanten), urges him to take moral paths, while Kessler encourages violence. Later, while facing off against Ezekiel (Shaun Benson), Butcher blacks and the Kessler part of him takes over to brutally murder Ezekiel. “What’s a little genocide between friends?” Kessler posits, advising Butcher to unleashThe Boys' Supe-killing viruson the world — a move that endangers Ryan (Cameron Crovetti) too.

While Morgan noted that he wants to have scenes with everyone in the cast, reuniting with Ackles is “[the] carrot in front of my face that I was chasing after.”

GivenJeffrey Dean Morgan’s response regardingThe Boysseason 5, it’s safe to say the actor will be back for the show’s final outing. That fact alone makes me hopeful about the long-overdueSupernaturalreunion. Plus,The Boysseason 4’s Soldier Boy tease, which suggests that Homelander (Antony Starr) will awaken his Supe father for the fight against Butcher, confirms thatAckles will return for the final season too. While Morgan noted that he wants to have scenes with everyone in the cast, reuniting with Ackles is “[the] carrot in front of my face that I was chasing after.”

The Boys' latest episode made a huge revelation about Joe Kessler, but there were several clues throughout season 4 that indicated he wasn’t real.

Season 5 Is The Show’s Last Chance To Reunite Jeffrey Dean Morgan & Jensen Ackles

The Boys Season 5 Is The Superhero Satire’s Final Outing

With Soldier Boy being MIA during the events of the fourth outing,The Boysseason 5is the last chance for the series to reunite Morgan and Ackles. To me, it would be a real shame — and massive waste of an opportunity — if the superhero satire didn’t go forward with theSupernaturalreunion. The Boyshas always had a wonderfully meta sense of humor, especially when it comes to its casting choices. In fact, I recall thinking that the reveal of Ackles as Soldier Boy was extra perfect because of his career-defining role in Kripke’sSupernatural.

I Don’t Want Jared Padalecki In The Boys Season 5 After Amazon’s New Spinoff Announcement

At San Diego Comic-Con, Amazon Prime Video announced a spinoff set within the world of The Boys — and Jared Padalecki would benefit from joining it.

The Boys' Most Exciting Supernatural Reunion Will Be Much Different Than I Imagined

Jeffrey Dean Morgan & Jensen Ackles Will Share The Screen — But Not Much Else

No matter how it happens, I think theSupernaturalreunion duringThe Boysseason 5 will be a ton of fun in that wink-at-the-TV sort of way. As Butcher hunts down Supes, and Kessler appears to him, Soldier Boy will most likely be hot on Butcher’s tracks. That said,I know Morgan and Ackles will be in the same scene or room, but the characters will have to interactthroughButcher. Honestly, getting Morgan and Ackles to share the screen withoutactuallyconversing is a funny bit that feels in line withThe Boys' sense of humor.

All four seasons ofThe Boysare streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

The Boys

The Boys is a gritty and subversive take on the superhero genre, focusing on a group of vigilantes who confront powerful superheroes abusing their abilities, exploring themes of corruption and moral ambiguity in a world where heroes are not always what they seem.
