The CW seriesSuperman & Loisgave fans a fresh new perspective of the beloved DC characters,Clark Kent and Lois Lane. The superhero drama has the now-married couple moving back to Smallville to raise their twin teenage sons, Jonathan and Jordan. Unfortunately, the family’s hopes of an idyllic small-town life are interrupted by the nefarious plans of such infamous villains as Lex Luthor, Eradicator, and Bizarro.

Jordan Elsass played Jonathan Kent in seasons 1 and 2 ofSuperman & Lois.Unlike his brother, Jonathan didn’t inherit his father’s Kryptonian powers, but he makes up for it with athletic prowess. Before taking on the role of Jonathan, Elsass played Tyler Young on the Amazon seriesPanic, and wasTrip Richardson in the Hulu mini-series dramaLittle Fires Everywhere.Although being cast in a big TV franchise was an honor for the young actor, he chose to leaveSuperman & Loisfor very valid reasons.

Jordan Elsass Left Superman & Lois To Prioritize His Mental Health

He Also Discussed Taking Time Away From Acting Altogether

In 2022, shortly before the premiere ofSuperman & Loisseason 3, Warner Bros. announced that Jordan Elsass would be leaving the series. The news of the actor’s departure came as a surprise and disappointment to many fans of the show. However,Elsass addressed his exit from the series via a Cameo video, citing that his mental health was his reason for leaving.

Elsass went on to say in the video that he was even considering leaving the acting business altogether.“I’m still debating whether or not I’m even going to act for a while. I may kind of go in a different direction.”

What Superman & Lois Season 5 Could Have Been About

Superman & Lois has ended after four seasons, but we can’t help but wonder what season 5 could have been about.

Of course, I think it’s a great thing that Elsass chose to put his mental health first. As for his acting career, while I respect his decision, I hope thatSuperman & Loiswon’t be the last time we see him on screen.

Michael Bishop Replaced Elsass As Jonathan Kent In Superman & Lois Season 3

He Made The Character His Own While Paying Respect To Elsass

With the abruptness of Jordan Elsass’s departure, theSuperman & Loisproducers were quick to find a replacement in Australian actor Michael Bishop. In an interview withEntertainment Weekly,Bishop described the process as a bit hectic, saying: “I found out I had the role five days before they started shooting, and I just jumped straight in.”Bishop also toldEWhow he prepared to take on a beloved character that someone else had previously played.

“I wanted to stay true to the character that had been built by the previous actor, but I also wanted to find what was different about my Jon and just played him how I felt he should be played, with the incredible foundations that was built by Jordan.”

While Elsass gave a fantastic performance asJonathan Kent inSuperman & Lois, Bishop proved that he had just as much of an understanding of the character— especially when a tragedy struck the Kent family in the show’s third season that mirrored Bishop’s own experience. In the episode “In Cold Blood,” Lois Lane received a breast cancer diagnosis that devastated her and her family. In a sad coincidence, Bishop’s mother was also given the same diagnosis.

“My mom in real life was diagnosed with breast cancer about five years ago, and the way that Jonathan deals with finding out his mom has breast cancer is very similar to how I dealt with the whole situation,”Bishop toldEW. “It was bizarre living through this season because I was reflecting a lot on my own life and how much that’s impacted me.”

As for the possibility of continuing an acting career, there is little to report at the moment. WhileElsass’s IMDb page indicates that he has five upcoming projects, all in various degrees of production, there have been no official announcements from theSuperman & Loisacto himself. Whatever direction he chooses to take, I just hope that Elsass continues to be happy and healthy.
