The crossover will feature Angela Bassett’s Athena Grant boarding The Odyssey while assisting the FBI in chasing leads during a suspected robbery. The crossover will be the first forDoctor Odyssey, which premiered last fall but will join the list of many for the9-1-1franchise.
Crossovers are not new toRyan Murphy’s shows, but it will be one of the first times that two shows with different genres intersect in such a major way. However,Doctor Odysseypart 2 has begun changing its pace in a gripping way, hopefully bridging the gap in preparation for its crossover with9-1-1. As exciting as theDoctor Odysseyand9-1-1crossover is sure to be, it will be missing one major component.

Athena Is Boarding The Odyssey For Work, Not Pleasure
The9-1-1andDoctor Odysseycrossover would have been the perfect time for Athena and Bobby to overcome their fears after their harrowing cruise ship incident in9-1-1season 7. However, according to an interview withTVLine,Angela Bassett rejected the offer to have both her and Bobby appearonDoctor Odyssey’s The Odyssey. In the interview, Bassett revealed that when producer Ryan Murphy first pitched the idea for the crossover which would have the couple appear together, she “objected.”
Bassett revealed that her character Athena would not be able to board a cruise ship so soon after she and Bobby almost drowned in one. Instead, she is joining the cruise ship for work and duty. Adding on, Bassett said,“Duty calls, so she has to go, much to her chagrin and displeasure.“This lines up with Athena’s strength and passion for helping others. As a field sergeant, Athena knows when to set her personal fears aside to let justice prevail.

The9-1-1andDoctor Odysseycrossoveris only happening because the show’s writers were able to craft a story that fits with Athena’s character. As a result,it just did not make sense to bring Bobbyon too. If Athena and Grant both appeared onThe Odysseyduring the crossover, it would be for pleasure. But if Athena went alone, it would be for work, and that aligned best with her needs.

The Crossover’s Storyline Could Have Been Rearranged
The9-1-1andDoctor Odysseycrossover did not have to be focused on a single police investigation. It also did not have to take place on The Odyssey at all.Doctor Odysseyhas featured medical scenarios that occur while the ship is at a port, so it is not uncommon to imagine a crossover episode centering on a dilemma that occurs outside the ship while still involving the crew. As such, Bobby and his team at the 118 could have easily joined Athena and theDoctor Odysseycharacters.
The9-1-1andDoctor Odysseycrossover airs on March 20 at 9 p.m. ET on ABC.
Since9-1-1is set in Los Angeles, andDoctor Odysseyis set around luxurious port destinations,the crossover could have included some problem at the Los Angeles portthat involved needing a firefighting unit to respond. This would have made the perfect scenario to bring in the 118 along with Athena and the other9-1-1characters. Any 9-1-1 call needs firefighters, medical, and police officers, and theDoctor Odysseymain characters only fill out one category.

The Crossover Could Have Been More Lighthearted
With Athena working on a case for the FBI while overcoming her fear of ships, the crossover is sure to have some heavy and tense undertones, but it did not have to be that way.Involving Bobby and the 118 could have led to fun interactions between the charactersand resulted in a full-blown crossover event that features even the cast’s guest stars interacting in amusing ways. It would have especially been nice to see the medical team on The Odyssey work with9-1-1’s medical team in addition to seeing them interact with the 118.

The Odyssey is also a fantastic cruise ship and there is something for everyone. Maddie and Chimney could have had an amazing time relaxing on board, with or without their children. Buck’s reaction to The Odyssey would also have been amazing to see. After experiencing some of life’s difficulties, Buck would have really enjoyed living life to the fullest on board one of fiction’s best cruise ships. Hopefully, Athena will enjoy working on The Odyssey so much that she returns with her9-1-1team sometime in the future.
