Summary
The Dark Knight Rises’ ending continues to be a topic of debate among Batman fans and with good reason, but I now understand that, despite what it seems, it’s not a happy ending at all. Although more versions of Batman have arrived sincetheDark Knighttrilogyended, Christopher Nolan’s take on the Caped Crusader remains one of the best and most beloved ones. Nolan’s darker and more realistic Batman and Gotham City set a standard not just for future Batman adaptations but for superhero movies in general, but I think it has been misunderstood for years.
TheDark Knighttrilogy followed Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) from the well-known traumatic experience of the murder of his parents to his training with the League of Shadows and his encounter with some of the most notable villains from the comics. The closing chapter of the trilogy,The Dark Knight Rises, has been endlessly discussed due to the ambiguity of its ending (is Alfred dreaming or is Bruce truly alive and well?), but I now finally understand that it’s not really a happy ending, but it’s still an interesting one.

How Batman Escaped At The End Of The Dark Knight Rises
The Dark Knight Rises made the audience believe Batman died, only to reveal right at the end that he was alive and well. So, how did he do that?
The Dark Knight Trilogy Is About Bruce Wayne’s Batman Curse
The Batman Curse Is Not Just About Bruce
The Batman curse isn’t just for Bruce – it’s also for those closest and dearest to him.
Bruce Wayne goes through a lot in theDark Knighttrilogy, beginning with the murder of his parents, a key moment in his decision to become Gotham City’s vigilante. Becoming Batman has a high cost for Bruce, as he pretty much gives up any type of personal relationship for the safety of others, but at the same time, he has to keep up with the public image of playboy millionaire Bruce Wayne so his secret identity won’t be discovered. However, the Batman curse isn’t just for Bruce – it’s also for those closest and dearest to him.

Throughout theDark Knighttrilogy, Bruce isn’t the only one affected by Batman and everything that comes with him. As mentioned above, Batman directly impacted Bruce’s personal relationships, leading him to only have superficial ones, and those he actually had a deeper bond with were the most affected by the Batman curse.Rachel Dawes died when the Joker kidnapped her and Harvey Dent, which in turn led to the latter’s transformation into Two-Face and to Gotham living a lie so they never learned what truly happened to Dent.
Alfred was also affected by Batman, though at a more personal and deeper level. As the guardian and only father figure Bruce Wayne had, Alfred saw the kid he had cared for become a vigilante who risked his life fighting crime every night. Alfred also saw the fall of Batman between the events ofThe Dark KnightandThe Dark Knight Risesand how Bruce isolated himself. Batman was the hero Gotham City needed, but he came with a huge price for Bruce and his loved ones.

The Dark Knight Rises Saves Bruce Wayne
Batman Made A Big Sacrifice To Save Bruce
I find there are two sides to the ending ofThe Dark Knight Rises: a happy one and a sad one, and Bruce got the former.
Atthe end ofThe Dark Knight Rises, Batman sacrifices himself to save Gotham City from destruction. Batman took the bomb that was supposed to destroy Gotham and, with the help of his aerial craft, the Bat, took it far over the bay so it could safely explode – however, this also meant Batman would die, as it was previously mentioned that the autopilot of the Bat didn’t work.Batman is presumed dead and honored as a hero, while a private funeral is held for Bruce, who left his estate to Alfred.

Alfred goes to Florence, where he used to go when Bruce left many years ago, and finds Bruce alive and with Selina Kyle. I find there are two sides to the ending ofThe Dark Knight Rises: a happy one and a sad one, and Bruce got the former. The audience spent three movies seeing how Batman had affected Bruce for years, buthe found a way out that honored Batman’s role in Gothamwhile also giving Bruce the privacy he had needed for so long.
Bruce found a way past his trauma and commitment to Gotham by breaking the rule of having to be the hero, but that was his key to freedom, peace, and happiness, all very well-deserved – and, to make it more special, he got to share all that with Selina Kyle, who had also struggled to break free from a persona she had to create out of necessity.
The Dark Knight Rises Dooms John Blake
John Blake Is Set To Repeat Batman’s Story
Blake was a valuable ally to Batman and Gordon throughoutThe Dark Knight Rises, and Bruce chose him as his heir, though not exactly of his fortune.
The sad part ofThe Dark Knight Rises’ ending is not about Bruce but John Blake, and it continues the above-mentioned Batman curse. John Blake is that one character in theDark Knighttrilogy that I wish had been introduced earlier so he could have been given the time and development he deserved. Officer John Blake was an orphan and correctly deduced Batman was Bruce Wayne, asking him to resume his vigilantism. Blake was a valuable ally to Batman and Gordon throughoutThe Dark Knight Rises, and Bruce chose him as his heir, though not exactly of his fortune.
Bruce found someone suitable to carry on with Batman’s legacy not because Blake was physically capable, but because he had a similar background and trauma as his.
Bruce left the Batcave and everything in it to Blake, hinting at him taking over Batman’s vigilante duties in Gotham City at some point. As emotional and exciting as this was,Bruce doomed Blake to repeat and carry on the Batman curse: both were orphans, both raised in Gotham City, and both knew exactly what Gotham needed. Bruce found someone suitable to carry on with Batman’s legacy not because Blake was physically capable, but because he had a similar background and trauma as his, which made his moral core so unwavering.
TheDark Knighttrilogy is about Batman’s curse, its effects on Bruce and his loved ones and how it was passed down to Blake, which givesThe Dark Knight Risesa bittersweet ending: a happy one for Bruce, who was finally saved from the Batman curse, but a sad one for Blake, whatever his future was afterThe Dark Knight Rises.
