WARNING! This article contains SPOILERS for House of the Dragon season 2, episode 4 and George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood book, on which the show is based!
Summary
As the biggest and most lethal dragon inHouse of the Dragon, there are inevitable questions about how Vhagar dies and whether she perishes in the war. Given how easily Vhagar killed Lucerys and Arrax in season 1 before killingRhaenys and Meleys inHouse of the Dragonseason 2, it may almost seem like defeating the old dragon is impossible at this point. Thoughher kill streak and destruction in Westeros will continue to growwith Aemond Targaryen on her back, Vhagar does meet her end inHouse of the Dragon’s timeline.
Originally ridden by Queen Visenya Targaryen, sister-wife of Aegon the Conqueror, Vhagar is now the oldest and largest dragon in Westeros following the death ofBalerion the Black Dread. Before Aemond, Vhagar was previously bonded with Daemon and Viserys’ father, Baelon Targaryen, and Baela and Rhaena’s mother, Laena Velaryon, with the dragon seeing little to no combat during that time. However, after surviving the deadly Conquest and the next 130 years,Vhagar is killed in the dragon battlesofHouse of the Dragon’s Targaryen civil war.

Vhagar & Aemond Are Killed In A Duel With Caraxes & Daemon In The Dance Of The Dragons
Vhagar Dies In The Battle Above The Gods Eye In HOTD
Daemon feared that Caraxes wouldn’t be able to take Vhagar alone and Aemond similarly felt his uncle would be a fool to face him alone, with both technically being right and wrong in George R.R. Martin’sFire & Bloodbook. AfterRhaenyra takes King’s Landingfrom Team Green,Aemond and Daemon meet at Harrenhal for a duel, which the show has been gradually building up through in both characters’ storylines. From Aemond seeing Daemon as his greatest adversary in battle toDaemon seeing himself as Aemond in visions, the two are unable to escape the temptation of besting the other in this war.
TheBattle Above the Gods Eye, which is expected to be the most spectacular and visually striking battleinHouse of the Dragon, will be how both Daemon andAemond Targaryen die in the series. In addition to the riders, both of their dragons, Caraxes and Vhagar, also perish in the fighting. The duel consists of just the two riders and their dragons meeting in the skies, where uncle and nephew fight while the two dragons scorch their fire and brutally tear each other apart.

After an entire Conquest and a century of life thereafter, Vhagar dies at the hands of Daemon Targaryen and Caraxes.
When fatal blows are dealt to both Caraxes and Vhagar, including Caraxes closing his jaws around Vhagar’s neck, all four are sent falling to the waters below. As they’re falling, Daemon jumps from Caraxes to Vhagar and stabs Dark Sister through Aemond’s eye socket.Fire & Bloodreveals that the crash into the water is lethal for all four, leaving no room for either Targaryen or the two dragons to survive. After an entire Conquest and a century of life thereafter, Vhagar dies at the hands of Daemon Targaryen and Caraxes.

Vhagar dies when she is 181 years old. Comparably, Balerion the Black Dread died of old age when he was already over 200 years old.
Vhagar Will Likely Die In House Of The Dragon Season 3
The Battle Above The Gods Eye Will Likely Be Saved For HOTD Season 3’s Ending
While some may be eager to see the dragon’s demise after killing Lucerys and Rhaenys, there’s still plenty of time before Vhagar dies inHouse of the Dragon. The Battle Above the Gods Eye occurs after Rhaenyra takes King’s Landing, which is predicted to happen at the end of season 2 or early inHouse of the Dragonseason 3. Additionally, the show won’t want to get rid of Daemon and Aegon too soon, so it seems likely that the Battle Above the Gods Eye will be saved for a big moment late in season 3. Therefore,Vhagar will likely die aroundHouse of the Dragonseason 3’s ending.
Vhagar Killing THAT Dragon Is Even More Tragic When Remembering Her Last 2 Riders Before Aemond
House of the Dragon season 2, episode 4 fully begins the Dance of Dragons, and Vhagar’s first victim is much more tragic than first thought.
By the time she dies,Vhagar will have killed three Targaryen riders and their dragons: Lucerys and Arrax, Rhaenys and Meleys, and Daemon and Caraxes. The majority of the Targaryens’ dragons die in the Dance of the Dragons, and Vhagar and Aemond are responsible for several of the most brutal killings. Additionally, with Vhagar’s death, the last of the dragons from the Conquest who predate the Targaryen reign in Westeros are wiped out, snuffing out an important era in House Targaryen’s history.

How Caraxes Is Strong Enough To Kill Vhagar In House Of The Dragon
While it seemed as if no dragon would be able to successfully face Vhagar alone, Daemon and Caraxes accomplish this – albeit at the cost of their own lives. Ultimately, Caraxes is able to kill Vhagar because of how weakened she’s become throughout the Dance of the Dragons. Vhagar is old and large, and it takes her more time to recover from the tolls of battle than a relatively smaller and younger dragon like Caraxes.Vhagar’s wings are already torn apart with holesin them inHouse of the Dragon, and when the Battle Above the Gods Eye arrives, Aemond has already overexerted Vhagar’s strength by terrorizing the Riverlands.
