Summary
Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtreeintroduces a new Eternal Sleep mechanic that is important to understand.Shadow of theErdtree has received great reviewswhile continuing the fantastic world and gameplay of the base game. The expansion added hordes of new bosses, weapons, magic, and armor to create new ways to survive the harsh world. All of this combined to create a DLC that may be one of the best in gaming history.
InElden Ring, one of the most important mechanics to manage is status effects. Currently, there are seven different status effects in the game, which can mean the difference between life and death by being able to cure them or apply them to enemies. In this regard, many builds are centered around constantly applying status effects to help wear down the target in one way or another.

Elden Ring DLC - Which Ending Is Canon In Shadow Of The Erdtree
With Elden Ring’s multiple endings, it can be tough to pin down which could be canon. Though, the plot of Shadow of the Erdtree may hold some clues.
How Does Eternal Sleep Work In Elden Ring Shadow Of The Erdtree?
Trivializing Common Enemies
Shadow of the Erdtreeintroduced an upgraded version of the Sleep status effect known as Eternal Sleep. This will put any common enemy to sleep forever, or at least until the area is reloaded, meaningthey can be attacked without ever waking from the damage. Any enemies that are immune to falling asleep will instead be staggered for a brief period.
Does Eternal Sleep Work Against Elden Ring Bosses?
A Balanced Reprieve
Bosses and minibosses willgo to sleep for longer than common enemies but will eventually wake up from damage or when the effect dissipates. Unfortunately, this does lower the effects' usefulness against bosses, but it is an understandable balance choice. If Eternal Sleep could put bosses to sleep for the entire fight, it would trivialize the entire purpose of the game. As it is now, even having a few extra seconds to recover or get in some free damage could make a huge difference.
How To Apply Eternal Sleep In Elden Ring
Ease Of Use Versus Consistency
Currently,Elden Ringhas a small handful of ways to apply Eternal Sleep to enemies. Thecheapest way is with one of three consumable itemsacquired from one ofShadow of the Erdtree’s new cookbooks:St. Trina Disciple’s Cookbook. These allow players to craft a throwableEternal Sleep Pot, or twoEternal Sleep Greasethat can be put on weapons to inflict the status condition.
All of these require theDeep-Purple Lilyflower to craft.
The most consistent way of applying Eternal Sleep is by using the newVelvet Sword of St. Trina. This swordhas a special skill called Mists of Eternal Sleep that will send out a cloud that applies Eternal Sleep. The sword can be found in acave system to the northwest of the Stone Coffin Fissuregrace site and is well protected. However, it is well worth the effort required for those looking to build into this new effect.
Overall, this upgrade of an existing status effect is a wise and strong but balanced addition to the game. For those who are dedicated, it is a way to reduce time spent fighting common enemies. However, its strong abilities are balanced by the reduced effect on fights that are supposed to be harder. Thus,Shadow of the Erdtree’s Eternal Sleep works intoElden Ringbeautifully while continuing to raise the strength of the Tarnished.
