Every iPad Color Compared: Which Should You Choose?

It’s easy enough to search the web for images of every iPad color available, but often images online don’t share the full story. They’re shot in optimal lighting conditions and ultimately tell very little about the way the iPad will look in your hands once you get it home and start using it. This is especially true when making comparisons, given many of the colors are so similar to each other.

Our rundown of every iPad color aims to help you make the most informed choice when it’s time to buy.

iPad Colors: Blue, Pink, Yellow, Silver

First in the line-up, we have the standard iPad. You’ll find that this iPad comes in the most vibrant colors out of any model. The Blue, Pink, and Yellow options here are all bold and extremely fun.

The Blue iPad is about as close to an electric blue as Apple has ever shipped on any iPad model, though it’s just a tad less saturated than a true electric blue. Pink is right near the line that crosses over into hot pink, but it’s a bit warmer and richer. The Yellow option looks in person like your favorite lemon-flavored lollipop. When introducing the Mac OS X redesign in 2000, Steve Jobs famously said, “One of the design goals was that when you saw it, you wanted to lick it.” The Yellow iPad feels like an extension of that philosophy.

Silver is the same you’d expect from Apple if you’ve seen any Silver MacBook or iPad over the past decade; you might have seen this color on both whendeciding between a Mac and iPad. It’s neutral, but still a great option for those who want an iPad color that’s a little less loud. That said, you really can’t go wrong with any of these terrific colors.

iPad Air Colors: Space Gray, Blue, Pink, Purple, Starlight

Compared to the iPad, the iPad Air’s color options don’t pop as much. Despite sharing identical names for colors like Blue and Pink, the shades between iPad and iPad Air are noticeably different. Expect more muted colors here, but they’re still attractive and offer a slightly more “professional” feel.

Of all the colors, Blue is the closest to its regular iPad brethren. It’s not as lively, but it’s still appreciably blue with decent saturation—overall more akin to a slate blue. The iPad Air’s Pink is, quite frankly, nothing like the vivid shade of the iPad. Instead, Apple opted for a baby pink for this model. It’s much more subtle, which you’ll likely appreciate if you want your tablet to look more indistinct. The Purple iPad Air is light in color, like Pink; it’s similar to a lilac and is quite soothing.

While there isn’t any major news about Space Gray if you’re familiar with the gunmetal-esque Space Gray MacBooks or older Space Gray iPhones, Starlight has been a hot topic since its debut. Many have called it a hybrid between Silver and Apple’s classic champagne-like Gold, and they’d be right. If you’re looking for a strictly Silver iPad Air, you’ll be disappointed with Starlight. The golden undertones are very apparent, but admittedly not apparent enough to have a proper Gold label either. If champagne is a subtle gold, think of Starlight as a subtle champagne.

iPad mini Colors: Space Gray, Pink, Purple, Starlight

All the iPad mini colors are just about identical to the iPad Air shades. When youcompare the iPad mini to the base iPad, the Pink is, again, starkly different in appearance but pretty in its own way. The only color missing from the iPad mini lineup is the Blue option available for iPad Air. Aside from that questionable absence, the iPad mini and iPad Air colors are the same.

iPad Pro Colors: Space Gray and Silver

Apple decided to leave all the exuberant colors for the non-Pro iPad models. Oh well! Space Gray and Silver are undeniable classics, and they make the iPad Pro look super sleek. There’s no trickery with the shades either—these are the Space Gray and Silver you’ve come to know and love from Apple’s other products.

Reviewing Every iPad Color

The selection of iPad colors has never been as interesting and diverse as it is right now. There is something for everyone, whether you’re a joyous Yellow, subtle Pink, or suave Space Gray. Though Apple has some discrepancies to work out between the shades for different models, the options are simple enough and pleasant to choose from.
