Summary
Friezais one ofDragon Ball’s most noteworthy villains, showing up again and again to challenge Goku and Vegeta. Due to the number of appearances he’s had over the years, Frieza has grown in power and gained transformations at almost the same rate that Goku and Vegeta have.
Frieza’s various forms tend to be a bit different from those obtained by Goku and Vegeta. Some of his forms are actually intended to hold him back and make him weaker, as Frieza initially had great difficulty controlling his true power. This also has the side benefit of allowing him to escalate to higher and higher levels of power as a fight drags on, causing enemies to fall into despair as Frieza only grows stronger. Frieza also has access to some transformations which naturally increase his abilities further, including his most powerful form, the true extent of which has yet to be seen.

8Frieza’s First Form is Iconic
First Appearance:Dragon Ball Z Kai, “A Powerful New Foe! Frieza, Ruler of the Universe!”
This is the form that Frieza debuts in, and is one of his most iconic looks. This version of Frieza wears the traditional Frieza Force armor, and features spiked horns emerging from Frieza’s head. Frieza also has a rather sharp-looking tail in this form, which he won’t hesitate to use as a weapon should the situation call for it. This form is designed to suppress Frieza’s innate power, and is the physically weakest form available to him. Despite this, Frieza spends a significant amount of time in this form, particularly in his earliest appearances.
Frieza’s first form is also shared by Frost, another member of Frieza’s race from Universe 6. This makes it seem like the lower forms are inherent abilities of Frieza’s race, rather than transformations that have to be trained for and unlocked.

7Frieza’s Second Form is Massive
First Appearance:Dragon Ball Z Kai, “A Nightmare Transformation! Frieza’s Power-Level One Million?!”
Frieza’s second form takes the basic appearance of the first form and pushes it to the extreme.Frieza becomes substantially taller and more muscular, and his horns bend and point upward, somewhat like those of a bull. These horns are no joke, as Frieza impales Krillin upon them after transforming into this state for the first time, piercing through his armor with ease. Frieza’s towering size makes him far more intimidating to his opponents, and his power level rises substantially, instilling the kind of fear that Frieza thrives upon.
Frieza’s Second Form is a bit impracticalin many situations due to its size, and isn’t used all that often. The transformation is so powerful and sudden that it destroys the armor Frieza was wearing in his first form, leaving him slightly more vulnerable to attacks.

6Frieza’s Third Form is His Most Bizarre
First Appearance:Dragon Ball Z Kai, “Piccolo Reborn! Frieza’s Second Transformation!”
Frieza’s third form is definitely the strangest-looking form that Frieza takes on. His skull extends out behind him, elongating his head in an unusual way. Frieza’s shoulders also grow huge and stick out, with large protrusions emerging from both his shoulders and skull. This is still a transformation that suppresses Frieza’s true strength, but it is the least suppressed in this form.Even Frieza admits that this form isn’t exactly a beautiful one, but the increase in power over his second form is enough to be worthwhile for him to take it on.
Frieza’s Universe 6 counterpart, Frost, also has a form that resembles this one, although he refers to it as his second form rather than his third. Frieza only used his third form briefly, before ascending directly to his “final form”–which has turned out to be anything but final.

5Frieza’s “Final Form” Becomes His New Default State
First Appearance:Dragon Ball ZKai, “Frieza’s Final Transformation! The Ultimate Nightmare Begins!”
Frieza’s “Final” form is actually his true form, with his power unsuppressed. This is the form Frieza was born in, and is so powerful he had a difficult time controlling it, thus necessitating the lower forms. In this form, Frieza loses the spikes and the size, and is much sleeker and less weighed down than previously. Following his time in Earth’s Hell, Frieza gained the ability to remain in this form at all times, allowing him full access to his power whenever he wants. Frieza spends most of his time in this form inDragon Ball Super, so much so that the lower forms are almost never seen.
As his true form, Frieza is able to achieve all of his later transformations directly from this stage, making it one of his most important forms, and one of the best known.

4Frieza Pushes Past 100% in His Full Power Form
First Appearance:Dragon Ball Z Kai, “Avenge the Fallen, Goku! Countdown to the Planet’s Destruction”
Frieza’s “final” form has a further power-up which he utilizes when he concentrates on using 100% of his power. After approaching 85% of his full power, Frieza begins to bulk up, gaining incredible amounts of muscle mass that cause his body to look as if it’s overflowing with strength. In this form, his power is almost on the level of Super Saiyan Goku, but this transformation is difficult for Frieza to maintain, growing weaker over time, and thus necessitating that he only use it as a weapon of last resort.
Frieza first uses this on Namek, but pulls it out again during the Tournament of Power inDragon Ball Super, at which time he’s shown to have far greater mastery of it, although it still saps his stamina at a fairly substantial rate.

3Mecha Frieza Disappoints
First Appearance:Dragon Ball Z Kai, “There is Planet Earth, Father! Frieza and King Cold Strike Back!”
Mecha Frieza is a form created when Frieza was revived and rebuilt after his defeat at Namek, now existing as a cyborg. The cybernetic enhancements that Frieza received were intended to increase his power, but it’s impossible to say if that was actually the case, asMecha Frieza is rapidly defeated by Future Trunksbefore he was even able to launch an attack. Unlike most androids/cyborgs seen in the series, Mecha Frieza still has a strong Ki signature and is able to sense Ki just as well as he could before.
Because Frieza was killed on Earth in this form, Mecha Frieza was sent to Earth’s Hell, where he was tortured by cherubic angels playing happy, cheery music. When Frieza was revived in this form by a wish on the Dragon Balls, his body was brought back in pieces, which were reassembled in an advanced medical unit, allowing him to be free of the cybernetics and 100% biological once again.

2Golden Frieza Represents a New Level of Power
First Appearance:Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’
Golden Frieza is Frieza’s first true power-up transformation, wielding power on a level comparable to Goku’s Super Saiyan Blue. Frieza achieved this power while in Earth’s Hell, “image training” by imagining what he would do to Goku while he was restrained in Hell. Naturally, Frieza’s body changes to a golden color rather than the white it is usually, and largely remains visually similar to his true form, albeit a bit taller and more muscular.Golden Frieza possesses an absolutely massive amount of power, but this transformation is, like Super Saiyan, ultimately a temporary one.
Golden Frieza proved to be an exceptionally valuable ally during the Tournament of Power, able to stand up to even Jiren for a period of time. There’s even a small step up, known as “True Golden Frieza,” which is what Frieza calls it when he’s truly mastered the transformation.

1Black Frieza is Frieza’s Ultimate Form
First Appearance:Dragon Ball Supermanga, chapter 87, “The Universe’s Strongest Appears”
Black Frieza is a relatively new form of Frieza which has thus far only been seen once, inDragon Ball Super’s manga. In the chapter, Frieza shows up and reveals that he discovered a Hyperbolic Time Chamber, and used it to train for ten years, unlocking this new transformation that surpasses even Golden Frieza. Black Frieza proceeds to destroy Gas, the previous villain who wished on the Dragon Balls to be the strongest in the universe, with relative ease, before turning his attention to Goku and Vegeta. Despite all their power, including Ultra Instinct, Black Frieza was able to defeat them without breaking a sweat.
As it currently stands,Black Frieza is not only the most powerful transformationthat Frieza has, but also makes Frieza the most powerful warrior in Universe 7. While the full extent of Black Frieza’s powers and abilities have yet to be seen, there can be no question that Black Friezais Frieza’s most powerful form in the canon ofDragon Ball.

Dragon Ball
From the creative mind of Akira Toriyama, Dragon Ball is a mega multimedia franchise that spans back to the 1980s. Dragon Ball expanded quickly, starting as a serialized manga for Weekly Shonen Jump in Japan. It made its way overseas via manga and an anime adaptation that is enjoyed worldwide. Dragon Ball was the initial starting animated series that followed the adventures of the young Son Goku as he sought after the Dragon Balls. These mystical orbs would grant the wish of any who gathered them together. Then, the series would branch off into the immensely popular Dragon Ball Z, which followed Goku as an adult and featured high-intensity battles and Goku’s never-ending search to be the strongest. The series has also enjoyed several popular video game adaptations and continues to release several new animated series and theatrical films up to the recent popular Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero.
