One of the most interesting spells added toElden Ring’sShadow Of The ErdtreeDLC is Watchful Spirit, an Incantation you can get to give your character a spectral guardian in battle. This spell summons a golden skull that launches blasts of holy magic toward foes your character is locked onto. Characters with enough Faith can use this magic to protect themselves while still moving and attacking normally.
Incantations inElden Ringare one of the two major categories of magic in the game alongside Sorceries. While a Sorcery usually requires your character to have a high enough Intelligence stat, Incantations typically depend on your Faith score. Both pieces of magic could spec into the Arcane stat as well, but this tends to be connected to Dragon Communion magic, which the Watchful Spirit spell does not fall under.

How To Get The Watchful Spirit Incantation
Speak To Hornsent Grandam With A Special Item
you may get the Watchful Spirit Incantation inShadow Of The Erdtreebyspeaking to the NPC Hornsent Grandamwhile wearing a special piece of armor. Hornsent Grandam is a character you can meet south of the Small Private Altar Site of Grace, a location found within the Belurat, Tower Settlement area. This is the same place where you can fight theDivine Beast Dancing Lion boss inElden Ringduring the DLC’s story.
You won’t be able to reach Hornsent Grandam until you find the key to the Storeroom section of the Belurat, Tower Settlement. This item is located on a dead body near the same Grace Site where you would encounter Grandam.
After you defeat the Divine Beast, collect theDivine Beast Helmitem from the boss arena alongside the Runes and Remembrance from the strange and destructive creature. Return to Hornsent Grandam with this item equipped to your character and speak to the NPC at least once. Then, travel to any Site of Grace and go somewhere else, only for you to immediately return to Hornsent Grandam to talk to them a second time.
Doing this will cause Grandam to give you the Watchful Spirit Incantation and aSacred Seal inElden Ringneeded to help cast the magic. Thankfully, you don’t need to beat any other enemies to collect this spell, butmake sure you don’t kill Hornsent Grandam accidentallybefore taking down the Dancing Lion boss. Should the NPC be killed at any point, you may lose your chance to gain the powerful Incantation.
How To Use The Watchful Spirit Incantation
Match Stat Requirements And Stay Locked Onto Enemies
Casting Watchful Spirit oncesummons a golden skull above your character’s headthat periodically shoots arrows of magic toward whatever enemy you are targeting. As long as you stay locked onto a foe, the spell will shoot three to four arrows to deal decent damage. During this process, your character has complete freedom to move around, use melee attacks, or cast additional spells like you normally would inElden Ring’s combat.

you’re able to visit any Site of Grace to equip Watchful Spirit as one of your spells, but remember that you only have a limited number of Memory Slots through the memorization of various magic. Thebest spells inShadow Of The Erdtreemay take up far too many slots and rob your character of versatile magic options. Thankfully,Watchful Spirit only costs one slotto equip, making it very easy to use without too much commitment.
Watchful Spirit takes 12 FP to cast, which can seem like a decent chunk of your resources if your character has a below-average Mind stat. However, keep in mind that this spell conjures a guardian that lasts for a good amount of time, meaning you don’t have to cast the spell often to reap its benefits. Unlike other offensive spells, you don’t have to constantly drain your FP by casting Watchful Spirit again and again to deal damage.
This spelldeals more damage the higher your Faith stat is, so make sure to upgrade this aspect of your character to empower the magic further. Anyone who manages to get the Watchful Spirit spell inElden Ring’sShadow Of The ErdtreeDLC will have a much easier time using the magic to rack up damage against tougher foes, even the dangerous bosses in the DLC.
