Summary

Taking too long to complete oneCyberpunk 2077mission could lead to the permanent loss of a recurring character. For all its open-world interactivity,Cyberpunkdoesn’t actually have many timed quests or world events. For the most part, players can complete all its main and side jobs in whatever order they wish. But it is possible to lock oneself out of certain content, either by doing certain quests in the wrong order, or by making the wrongCyberpunkstory choices at important moments.

Even so, there are a few timed quests inCyberpunk, including one that couldruin the entirety of thePhantom LibertyDLC. Their rarity actually makes them more dangerous:the player is naturally conditioned to expect the plot will wait for them. But that’s not always the case, especially in the case of one particular side job. Its particulars do suggest the need for urgency, but other than that, the game doesn’t make its time-limited nature totally clear. And that can lead to disaster.

Phantom Liberty Fixed Cyberpunk 2077’s Biggest Open-World Issue

Cyberpunk 2077’s open-world suffered from repetitive side-content; an issue that was redressed by Phantom Liberty multilayered gigs.

The Cyberpunk Side Job “Fortunate Son” Is Secretly Timed

“Fortunate Son”: Time Limit & Consequences

The “Fortunate Son” side quest inCyberpunkhas a secret timer, and one of the involved NPCs can dieif the player isn’t fast enough. This side job begins immediately after “Queen of the Highway,” an important step inPanam’sCyberpunk 2077questline. Talk to Bob at the nomad camp, and he’ll explain that one of his buddies - Jake Scooter - needs a kidney, and fast. He has a lead on a cybernetic implant that could save Scooter, but it’s all the way across town in Little China.

So V has to race across Night City in order to pick up the kidney implant, then bring it back to Bob. There are some additional wrinkles, and if the player sees things through, they’ll learn that the police installed a virus in the implant in an effort to catch a completely different group of nomads. As long as V figures that out and explains it to Bob, he’ll be able to uninstall the virus and save Scooter. However, it’s easy to mess this job up long before then:take more than 24 hours to get back to Bob with the kidney, and Scooter will die.

Of course, it shouldn’t take anywhere close to 24 hours just to get to Little China and back. Instead, this hidden time limit is meant to punish players who put “Fortunate Son” off. As a result, it’s important to watch the preceding scene carefully, and take the urgency of Scooter’s condition into consideration. But as long as V heads out almost immediately, they’ll get back in plenty of time, and get a nice little reward for it further down the line.

Cyberpunk 2077 Player Finds A Way To Date Every Romanceable Character At Once

Cyberpunk 2077 had restricted its romance options in the past, but one player has found a way to date all of the game’s love interests simultaneously.

Completing Cyberpunk’s “Fortunate Son” Unlocks A Touching Scene Later

Plus, A Hidden Reference To The Star Ending

If Scooter is saved during “Fortunate Son,“he’ll appear later to serenade the Aldecaldos camp. Scooter has a pretty varied repertoire: he can play “The Beast of Beauclair,” a boss theme fromThe Witcher 3’sBlood and Wineexpansion, and one of manyWitcherreferences littered throughoutCyberpunk. He can also sometimes be heard covering fictional in-universe band Us Cracks, who can be heard on the radio throughout Night City. Their rivalry with Kerry Eurodyne also eventually plays into his personal quest.

But if V decides to ally with the Aldecaldos during “Nocturne Op55N1,” they’ll unlock an additional quest called “We Gotta Live Together.” Check in on Scooter during that job, and he’ll sing an entirely different kind of song. It’s a tragic ballad about a rootless boy whose wanderings lead him into a deadly gunfight. There are obvious parallels to many of the game’s most tragic figures, and the Aldecaldo nomads themselves, butthe melody is borrowed from the game’s score.

The same tune plays during “Pyramid Song,“the final job in Judy Álvarez’s storyline - the narrative about a person forced to wander after their home is destroyed makes perfect sense in the context of Judy’s life. It also plays during The Star ending, which V has to unlock in order to hear Scooter’s cover.

So, while Scooter isn’t the most central character in the story, saving him does unlock a sweet scene, and a beautiful song exclusive to The Star ending. Either way, it’s worth prioritizing “Fortunate Son” in order to save Scooter’s life in a timely manner. It’s one of very few time-limited quests inCyberpunk 2077, but it leaves a lasting impact either way.
