Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destructionepisode #9 opened with Kadode, Ouran, and all their friends attending college for the first time and befriending Futaba, the new character introduced in the previous episode.Futaba took everyone to a rally for SHIP, a movement protesting the government’s cruel treatment of the invaders, and when SHIP and some onlookers got into an argument over the merits of what the government was doing, a drunken Ouran somehow defused the tension. Following that, Kadode and Ouran went to Futaba’s place and both solidified their friendship and struck up a new friendship with Makoto.
As everyone’s new college lives continued, Kadode started pursuing a relationship with her old teacher, Watarase, Futaba joined SHIP, and nearly everyone started working jobs, leaving Ouran with no one to hang out with. As such, Ouran reluctantly joined the Occult Club and befriended Ojiro, the club president who refused to acknowledge the real-life UFO for being too easy a reveal of alien life. The two of them eventually made their way to Ojiro’s place so he could show Ouran his research, and while there,Ouran met the humanoid invader from previous episodes, he now hiding out in Ojiro’s apartment.

While all of that was happening, the government and SES, the organization in charge of building the anti-invader weaponry, were heavily implied to know about whatever would lead to the events ofDead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destructionepisode #0, and the new stadium being constructed was implied to be an ark to carry people to safety. Elsewhere, Tsutomu, an invader who survived the assault from the previous episode, was taken to a commune of invaders, and as they debated what they should be doing, the episode ended withKohiruimaki and his gang killing many of Tsutomu’s friends in the commune.
While Kadode and Ouran have always had some involvement with the overarching story thanks to Kiho’s death and the mysterious events of their childhood, the series has still largely kept them removed from the overarching plot. In episode #9, though, with Ouran both reuniting with the humanoid invader and learning that he is, in fact, an invader,Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destructionseems to be building up to Kadode and Ouran being fully involved in the larger story. How that will play out is unclear, but it’s something great to look forward to, regardless.

Dead Dead Demon’s’ writing was as great as always in episode #9, and a lot of that was due to its social commentary. The series has always had a political bent, butDead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destructionepisode #9 greatly expanded on the anime’s social commentarywith political protesting, arguing over government legislature, self-interested bureaucracy, and xenophobia leading to criminal activities, all of which has always been relevant and is especially relevant with everything that’s happened in recent years. That sort of writing has always been one of Inio Asano’s strengths, and fortunately, it’s on full display with episode #9.
All of the social commentary, of course, worked as well as it did thanks to the strong character writing. The anime always knows how to balance the inherent goofiness of its cast withrealistic dialogue and actions, and because of that,Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destructionepisode #9 could effortlessly use its cast for stories charged with social commentaryand have them come off as thoughtful and not underwritten or preachy. TheDead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destructionanime had some of its best writing with episode #9, so far, and with any luck, episode #10 will be even better.
