Wicked’s box office has been consistently strong throughout its run, but Daniel Craig’s new movie has beaten it in one way. Not only has the film adaptation ofWickedreceived great reviews, but it managed to debut at no. 1 in its first weekend at the box office, bringing in $112.5 million. To date,Wickedhas made over $359 million worldwide, continuing on strong in its second weekend. The film is playing on nearly 4,000 screens across the country, and thus will continue to rake in cash over the next few weeks.

Something especially impressive aboutWicked’s box office runis the fact that it has been able to maintain its strong performance despite competition. A phenomenon termed “Glicked” in an attempted Barbenheimer repeat,Wickedhad to compete directly with Ridley Scott’sGladiator IIduring its November 22 opening weekend. The following week, Disney releasedMoana 2, providing more heat to the fall box office. Even though the animated sequel edgedWickedout of the top spot, the Broadway musical did well nonetheless. Still, despite its dominance, a much smaller movie has managed to beatWickedin one key box office stat.

Queer Has A Stronger Per Theater Average Box Office Than Wicked

Queerhas managed to passWickedin terms of one key box office statistic. Originally premiering at the Venice Film Festival, theLuca Guadagnino-directedfilm tells the story of an American expat named William Lee who lives in Mexico City in the 1950s. There, Lee grapples with issues concerning drugs and addiction all the while experiencing a passionate romance with a much younger man.Queerfeatures a leading cast including Daniel Craig, Drew Starkey, Jason Schwartzman, Henrique Zaga, and Lesley Manville.

As perCollider,Queer’s per theater average (PTA) came in aboveWicked’s, with a PTA of $27,000. This gaveQueerthe second-largest PTA this weekend, coming in behind domestic frontrunnerMoana 2’s $32,000 but aboveWicked’s $20,000.Queer’s high PTA came from the $190,000 it earned on just seven screens during its limited release.

Our Take On Queer’s Success

This Could Be A Good Sign For The Film Long-Term

WhileQueeris lower-profile thanWickedin the public eye, it is impressive for the Craig-led film to beat the musical powerhouse in any regard. This alsoshows hope for the Oscar hopeful as A24 begins to releaseQueermore widelythan its extremely limited 7-screen release in the coming weeks. While a wider release will almost assuredly lower its PTA, if initial audiences are eager to seeQueer, it still bodes well for the film’s performance overall.
