Although he’s fighting alongside the good guys, Barnes' teaching methods can be harsh, startling some of the young karate fighters, including Demetri (Gianni DeCenzo). It’s a tense environment for Barnes to walk back into, even though he’s a very different person when he’s reintroduced in season 5.

In the decades that he’s beenbarred from participating in karate, because of his actions inThe Karate Kid Part III, it’s revealed that Barnes had a mentor and learned that he could use his hands to do good and fix things rather than just fight.
