Can You Leave a Circle on Twitter?

When Twitter revealed the launch ofTwitter Circles and how they work, it became clear that one thing was missing. The bad news is that the thing missing from Twitter Circles is the built-in, direct ability to leave them. That’s right, once you’ve been added to a Circle on Twitter, there’s no exit option.

However, there are a few workarounds you can try.

3 Ways to Leave a Twitter Circle

The good news is that while you can’t leave a Twitter Circle directly, there are a few workarounds that can help you escape a Twitter Circle or at least control the Circle content you see in your feed.

1. Unfollow the Person Who Added You

If you follow the person who added you to their Twitter Circle, then unfollowing them will remove you from their Circle. However, they can always re-add you even if you don’t re-follow them.

2. Block the Person Who Added You

If someone keeps adding you to their Twitter Circle and you don’t want to be in it, then you can always block them. Blocking a person will remove you from their Circle, but unblocking them will allow them to re-add you.

The problem with blocking someone on Twitter is it will also stop you from seeing any of their content in your feed, so this option is best left for spam accounts. If you want to block a user then look atthe difference between a soft and a hard block on Twitter.

3. Mute the Author of the Circle

If you don’t want to unfollow the person who added you to their Circle and you don’t want to block them, then it’s possible to always mute them. Muting the Author of a Twitter Circle will stop you from seeing their Circle Tweets.

Using Twitter’s New Circle Feature

Twitter Circles are designed to let users send Tweets to a small select group of people. The idea of Twitter Circles has great potential, but currently, they put too much power in the hands of the Circle owner. Until Twitter makes it easier for users to leave a Circle, they’ve left the door open for spam accounts and trolls to abuse them.
