Summary

League of Legends:Arcaneis one of the most beautifully animated series in a long time, and it seems the creatives behind the series want to tackle a highly regarded manga if they get the chance. Although this prospect does seem exciting, there are a few things that hinder this from happening.

In an interview with Fortische, the French studio behindArcane, Crunchyroll discussed with Pascal Charrue, the co-founder, about the production of the series, the inspirations and the workings of the studio.

When asked which manga they would love to bring to life, Pascal revealed thatVagabondby Takehiko Inoue was a series he would be interested in animating. He also mentioned Naoki Urusawa’s works, and since Pluto recently received an anime and Monster was one of the early 2000s hits, that only leaves20th Century BoysandBilly Bat.

Vagabond’s Anime Might Never Happen

The series' complex artstyle and storytelling would make it difficult to bring to a new medium

Although aVagabondanime does sound exciting, the chances that it will be short of the source material are very high. The manga has some of the best and most detailed art ever seen in the medium, and an animated series that has thousands of frames justcannot replicate such intricate artwork. It would be very costly and time-consuming to animate a series that is as visually beautiful all the time, and this fact is what makes a potentialVagabondanime less popular with fans of the series.

Another reason is that it doesn’t make sense. One reason an anime is produced is to boost the popularity and sales of the manga, as seen many times, such asDemon Slayer’s domination of Oricon sales charts. If an anime doesn’t make the manga more popular, there will be less incentive to pursue new seasons, but of course, there are exceptions.Vagabondhas 80 million copies in circulation without an anime, making it one of thebest-selling manga of all time. From Inoue cementing himself in the manga industry with his previous work,Slam Dunk, the popularity of samurai stories in Japan and the telling of the legendary Miyamoto Musashi,Vagabondwas an instant hit.

Samurai anime have long been an important part of the medium, and have proven to be one of the best and most iconic series.

Of course, the fact thatVagabondhas such a huge fanbase is also a good thing and could help in the push for an anime if a studio was ever interested. Nonetheless, it would be a huge undertaking that will inevitably have lots of expectations to deliver. Studio Fortiche has proved itself with the masterpiece that isArcane, and the studio’s enthusiasm and respect forVagabondmake the prospect very interesting.
