Stardew Valleyis a farming life simulation game, and as any farmer knows, crops must be protected from pesky crows at all costs. Just like in real life, crows sometimes appear on the in-game farm and eat valuable crops. And while players can scare them off on their own, they’re not always around to do so. That’s where scarecrows come in, literally standing in for the farmer and spooking off the birds that want to make off with the tasty crops.
Placing a scarecrow on a field protects a circle of 17 by 17 squares around it, keeping crows away as long as they’re out. Besides the standard scarecrow design, the game has several “rarecrows,“rare versions of scarecrows that serve as functional decor on the farm.Counting the basic design, there are 10 different scarecrows to collect, and some are more difficult to acquire than others.

10The Basic Scarecrow Is The Easiest To Acquire
Can Be Crafted With Common Materials
The basic scarecrow is the most common type of scarecrow inStardew Valley. It looks like a typical scarecrow, wearing the standard scarecrow uniform of overalls, wide-brimmed hat, and hay emerging from its sleeves. It may be basic, but it gets the job done just as well as the fancy rarecrows, since the appearance of a scarecrow doesn’t affect its effectiveness (except for one single rarecrow).
Stardew Valley Player Comes Up With Adorably Silly Alternative To Scarecrows
When one Stardew Valley player didn’t have any scarecrows, they found an adorable alternative to scare crows away from their crops, politely.
The simple scarecrow can be crafted at the first level of farming using some very common materials. This is one of the first items that players can craft in the game, once they collect all the needed items. Crafting the basic scarecrow requires 50Wood, 20Fiber, and oneCoal, all of which are easy to get a hold of.

9Rarecrow #5 Is The Cheapest Rarecrow
The Purple Rarecrow With Teal Overalls Can Easily Be Bought
Rarecrows don’t have names, so they’re referred to simply by their numbers. The fifth rarecrow inStardew Valleyis likely the first rarecrow that players will encounter, since it’s not difficult to get. This rarecrow is wearing a purple shirt with teal overalls, and sports long blond hair. Unlike the regular scarecrow, it has little white gloves for the hands, instead of hay.
The rarecrow is available for purchase for the lowest price of any scarecrow in the game, at 2,500 gold. It’s only available for sale on one in-game day, during the Flower Danceon Spring 24. Players can buy it from Pierre’s market stand, but if they can’t afford it they’ll have to wait until thefollowing year’s Flower Danceto get a hold of it.

8Rarecrow #4 Can Be Bought From The Traveling Cart
The Snowman Is One Of The Easiest Rarecrows To Get
The adorable fourth rarecrow might look a little out of place when used as a scarecrow inStardew Valley. That’s because this particular rarecrow resembles a jolly, wintry snowman, complete with a scarf and top hat. Luckily, this is one snowman that won’t melt in the heat of the sun, making it a great crow-scaring companion any time of year.
This rarecrow is one of the easier ones to acquire since there are multiple options for buying it. Players can eitherbuy it for 5,000 gold at the Festival of Iceon 8th of Winter or find it being randomly sold at the Traveling Cart. The budget-savvy player might want to wait until the latter, as the traveling cart sells the rarecrow for only 4,000 gold, a 1,000 gold discount from the festival rate.

7Rarecrow #2 Is Easy To Miss
The Witch Rarecrow Is Only Sold On One Day
The spooky second rarecrow might be effective in scaring crows away, but it would be just as likely to scare a person, too. This Halloween scarecrow is designed to look like a witch straight out ofThe Wizard of Oz,with deep green skin, a long black dress, and a pointy witch’s hat. Though this is also a year-round scarecrow companion, it looks the best on the farm in the fall, when it gives the right spooky vibe.
This rarecrow is another seasonal goodie, only found at the Spirit’s Eve Festivalon the 27th of Fall. The steeper price tag of 5,000 gold and the fact that it’s only available on one day a year means this item is a bit more difficult to get.

6Rarecrow #1 Requires Some Extra Work
This Studio Ghibili-Inspired One Can’t Be Bought For Regular Gold
Studio Ghibli fans will instantly recognize the inspiration for rarecrow #1 asTurnip Head fromHowl’s Moving Castle. The charming little rarecrow is a fan favorite thanks to its cute button-eyed expression, black hat, long coat, and big purple bowtie. It’s easy to imagine this rarecrow hopping away from the farm (but he actually stands and guards the crops like the rest of the scarecrows).
Longtime Fans Share Their Do’s And Don’ts For Those Just Starting Out In Stardew Valley
With Stardew Valley 1.6 finally on console, many people are trying the popular farming sim for the first time, and longtime fans share their tips.
This rarecrow is also a festival scarecrow, but it requires some additional work to acquire. Players can get it from theStardew Valley Fairon Fall 16, but instead of having a price in gold, this rarecrow costs 800 tokens. Players will need to earn enough tokens from the festival’s minigames before they can take it home to guard their crops in style. The fishing minigame is the easiest and quickest way to earn stars fast, but players who have enough cash on hand can simply buy any stars they’re missing for 50g each from the Token Seller.
5Rarecrow #3 Takes Some Gambling
Luck Needs To Be On Your Side To Get The Alien
The truth might be out there but this rarecrow is staying mum about it. The third rarecrow resembles an alien with a large green head and black eyes, wearing what looks like a gray jumpsuit. This rarecrow is more difficult to get a hold of, but it’s worth it for one big reason:it’s the only scarecrow inStardew Valleythat can wear hats.
Stardew Valley Has A Hard-To-Get Mask Even The Most Experienced Players Don’t Know About, & It’s A Direct Nod To Creator ConcernedApe
This one fun hidden hat is so hard to collect that only the most elite farmers who dedicate hours and hours to the game have access to it.
The alien rarecrow is available from the casino, which can only be accessed after “The Mysterious Qi” quest is completed. After players unlock the casino, they still need to get enough coins to afford the rarecrow, which costs 10,000 Qi coins. There are several methods for earning enough Qi coins, but whether players hit the slots or the Blackjack table, it helps a lot to do so on a lucky day. Using items that increase luck can also help reduce the grind, and when all else fails there’s always the option to buy the leftover Qi coins.
Qi coins are not to be confused withStardew Valley’s Qi Gems, which are spent in Qi’s Walnut Room on Ginger Island.
It Takes Some Luck And Monster Hunting To Get The Dwarf
The sixth rarecrow is in the shape of the character who sells the item to players, an adorable dwarf. The design is shaped like a small being wearing a blue shirt with red suspenders, and bright green shoes. A dark face with glowing red eyes peers out at players from under aDwarvish Helm.
Although this rarecrow isn’t expensive, costing a mere 2,500 gold, it’s difficult to get because of the location it’s sold. This rarecrow must be bought from the Dwarf’s shop, which is blocked by a rock that can only be removed by a Steel Pickaxe or a Cherry Bomb (or something more powerful). Even then, players will still need to complete the additional step of finding all four of the Dwarfish Scrolls, which are found in the mines, Skull Cavern, or by defeating monsters.
It Can Take A Lot Of Time And Luck To Get The Raccoon
Rarecrow #7 fights fire with fire, scaring one type of wildlife off with the image of another. ThisStardew Valleyscarecrow looks like a raccoon standing up on its long striped tail. The design is adorable, and seems more like a stuffed toy than anything scary, but it works just as well at spooking off crows.
This is one of the hardest rarecrows to find inStardew Valleybecause it takes some hard work and a bit of luck. To unlock this rarecrow, players will need to donate 20 artifacts to the museum, about half the total number of artifacts in the game.Artifacts can be foundby digging in certain spots, killing monsters, fishing up treasure chests, and a few other methods, all of which require plenty of luck. Once unlocked, this rarecrow can be bought from the Night Market’s Magic Shop Boat for 5,000 gold.
Double The Amount Needed for Scarecrow #7
The eighth rarecrow is one of the most difficult scarecrows to get inStardew Valleydue to the sheer luck and time it takes to gather the necessary materials. This friendly-looking design looks like a cross between a Tiki mask and a pineapple, with a much wider body than the others. It makes for a distinct decoration on the farm, looking out over the crops as their protector.
Stardew Valley 1.6.9 Update Brings One Of The Most Highly Requested Item Features Some Fans Didn’t Know They Needed
Stardew Valley’s 1.6 update is debuting on consoles not in its original form, but in the enhanced version 1.6.9 - new to PCs today, too.
Getting this rarecrow requires donating 40 distinct artifacts to the museum, which is nearly all the artifacts in the game. This is a difficult endeavor that requires plenty of time and dedication. Luckily, once this rarecrow is unlocked, it can be bought at the Winter Night Market for 5,000 gold.
This Fancy Scarecrow Also Needs One Of The Rarest Materials In The Game
The ninth rarecrow inStardew Valleyseems to be a wealthier version of the farmer. This dapper scarecrow wears a purple outfit topped by a fancy purple hat with a feather sticking out. The rarecrow represents the ultimate accomplishment of collecting the rest of the rarecrows in the game.
Once players get all the other rarecrows, a crafting recipe is sent to their mailbox. Even after this difficult achievement, they’ll still need to actually craft this one, which is no easy feat, either. Crafting rarecrow #9 takes 50Wood, 40Fiber, and oneIridium Ore, one of the rarest resources in the game. It’s worth the trouble, though, as this rarecrow has double the range of all other scarecrows, making this the most useful and rarest rarecrow inStardew Valley.
