Summary

It has been strongly teased that Mega Evolution has the potential to return inPokémon Legends: Z-A. The new addition to thePokémonfranchise sees the sixth generation region of Kalos making a return to deliver what is presumably a semi-open-world Pokémon catching experience, similar to theGen 4 prequel journey inPokémon Legends: Arceus.Mega Evolution is a fan-favorite battle featurethat was also introduced in the sixth generationPokémongames,X and Y.

TheKalos region’s lore and world-building are closely linked to the concept of Mega Stones, with the regional professor, Professor Sycamore, dedicating his research to Mega Stones and their deep-rooted connection to the region. Mega Evolution requires a Mega Stone for that specific Pokémon to be held by it in order to Mega Evolve in battle. This vastly improves the Pokémon’s stats while giving them a new ability and type. There are several Pokémon that would greatly benefit from having a Mega Evolution.

Tyrantrum from the Pokémon series

The Despot Pokémon

Tyrantrum is one of two fossil Pokémon from the Kalos region, alongside Aurorus, and one of thebest fossil Pokémon. SincePokémon Legends: Z-Ais focused on the Kalos region, it might finally be time to see one of the most recognizable fossil Pokémon in full Mega Evolved glory. In addition to already having a binding connection to the Kalos region, adding a connection to Mega Evolution and the Mega Stones could neatly wrap up the history of this colossal fossil, while also raising further questions about Kalos culture and history at large.

The prehistoric Pokémon, revived from the Jaw Fossil, has impressive stats. Tyrantrum has a base stat total of 521, placing it in the upper bound of Pokémon in terms of strength, and also possesses the rare Dragon type. Its counterpart, Aurorus, has thenotoriously weak Ice type, making it generally less attractive to Trainers, though this could conceptually be rectified by a Mega Evolution. Mega Tyrantrum could drop the Rock type in favor of being a Dragon/Dark-type Pokémon, giving it a STAB bonus on Brutal Swing and Crunch.

Stonjourner-Encounter-in-Pokémon

10Stonjourner Deserves At Least One Evolution

The Big Rock Pokémon

Stonjourner was introduced inPokémon Sword and Shield, and unfortunately, didn’t receive a Gigantamax form. Stonjourner is a single-stage evolution, meaningit doesn’t evolve from, or into, anything. There’s an argument to be made that Stonjourner hasn’t been fully realized yet in thePokémongames, but a Mega Evolution could change that, by giving it a small boost in stats in addition to a new type.

The big rock Pokémon is a pure Rock-type, with a base stat total of 470, making it above average and relatively impressive. Other Pokémon with a base stat total of 470 include Torkoal, Falinks, and Eiscue. Stonjourner is exclusively a physical attacker, having only 20 Sp. Atk and Sp. Def. A Mega Stonjourner could flip its identity on its head, by making it a physical and special wall, in addition to making it a Rock/Steel-type. This would make it an even stronger Trick Room abuser, while giving it access to STAB Heavy Slam.

Flygon-In-Pokémon-Anime

9Flygon Can Escape Garchomp’s Shadow With A Mega Evolution

The Mystic Pokémon

Introduced back in Generation 3, Flygon is one of the most impressive Dragon-types inPokémon. It’s the final evolution of the Trapinch line, and has access to a pool of moves that give it impressive type coverage. Unfortuately, Garchomp was added just one generation later, with the release of the Sinnoh games,Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. Garchomp shares the same type as Flygon, in addition to having higher base stats.Garchomp almost entirely overshadows Flygon, but a Mega Evolution could establish a new identity.

A Mega Flygon could drop the Ground typing in favor of a bug type, making it the first Bug/Dragon-type Pokémon. This would be a refreshing change of pace, sinceFlygon needs to be revised to compete with Garchomp. For its ability, it could bring back Trapinch’s ability, Arena Trap, making enemies unable to withdraw from combat with the desert-dwelling dragon.

Pokémon Pangoro in a forest

8Pangoro’s Mega Evolution Could Fix Its Shortcoming With A New Ability

The Daunting Pokémon

Pangoro is another Pokémon originating from the Kalos region, and the fully evolved form of Pancham.Pangoro has the rare type combination of Fighting/Dark, a combination shared only by Scraggy, Scrafty, and Urshifu. Pangoro also has an unusual method of evolution, requiring Pancham to level up while being over level 32, while there is a Dark-type Pokémon in the party. Pangoro is all around a very impressive Pokémon, but providing it with a Mega Evolution could serve to develop it even more.

Firstly, Pangoro is too weak against Fairy-types. Fairy is 4x effective against Pangoro, and attempting to fix this in a Mega Evolution would cause its identity to deviate too much from its original concept. However, due to its desire to dominate physical attacking in combat,a Mega Pangoro would massively benefit from the Intimidate ability. This lowers the attack stat of all opposing Pokémon by one stage when the user is first sent out in battle.

Pokémon Aegislash in a dark building

7Aegislash Is A Unique Pokémon Originating From Kalos

The Royal Sword Pokémon

Aegislash is one of the most fascinating and one-of-a-kind Pokémon that has ever been created. It has a stance-change mechanic, thanks to its ability, Stance Change, and its signature move, King’s Shield. Aegislash’s Blade Stance has a high attack stat, but low defense, while Shield Stance swaps this around in order to have stronger defenses. Aegislash is the final evolution of Honedge and Doublade. Just like Pangoro and the fossil mentioned previously, it also originates from the Kalos region.

Aegislash is one of the more memorable Pokémon from Kalos, especially considering it’s dual Ghost/Steel-type. For this reason, Aegislash absolutely deserves a Mega Evolution. It would allow it to stand up to the dominant Fairy-typePokémonpool that Kalos is known for, in addition to improving its status as a sweeper, thanks to its access to diverse moves, such as Rock Slide, Psycho Cut, Close Combat and Solar Blade.

Pokémon Haxorus roaring in a town

6Haxorus Could Enter Pseudo-Legendary Territory With A Mega Evolution

5The Axe Jaw Pokémon

The majestic axe jaw Pokémon hailing from the Unova region hasn’t received any recognition sincePokémon Black 2 and White 2.These Generation 5 sequels included a shiny Haxorus that was obtainable by completing the regional Pokédex and visiting the Nature Preserve. However, Generations 6, 7, 8, and 9 all seemed to forget about this phenomenal Pokémon.Every region has a pseudo-legendary Pokémon, which is defined by having a base stat total greater than, or equal to, 600. Despite Haxorus having a stat total of 540, it still has notable potential to have a Mega Evolution in the future.

Haxorus is the final evolution in its line, with Axew evolving into Fraxure, and then into Haxorus. As such, it’s not usually obtained until later in the game. This means that aMega Haxorus could easily boast a stat total of 600, potentially as high as 620. Due to the connection Haxorus has with mountainous regions, it could transform from a pure Dragon-type into a Dragon/Ground-type. It could also adopt the ability Sand Stream, making it worthy of competing with Excadrill and Tyranitar for its viability in sandstorm teams.

Pokédex entry for Coalossal

4Coalossal Could Fulfill Its Potential With The Right Mega Evolution

The Coal Pokémon

Coalossal is, competitively, a very talented Pokémon. This is, in part, thanks to its ability to Gigantamax. Furthermore, its dual typing of Fire and Rock compliments its relatively diverse pool of moves. The reason Coalossal is a popular candidate for competitive Pokémon is thanks to its signature ability, Steam Engine. This boosts its speed stat if it is hit by a Fire- or Water-type move, enabling a bulky hitter to obtain the speed of a sweeper with ease, especially in double battles when moves like Surf are used.

A Mega Coalossal could fully embrace the concept of a steam engine, turning it into a Fire/Water-type while maintaining its signature ability. This type combination would dampen the weaknesses of Ground and Water that Coalossal currently faces, while also maintaining STAB Heat Wave and Flamethrower. Alternatively, it could maintain its current form but be lifted by a large vapor of steam, while adopting the ability Levitate. This would also provide an answer to the 4x ground weakness that Coalossal currently faces.

Gholdengo surfing across a body of water

3Gholdengo Could Flourish With A Mega Evolution Type Change

The Coin Entity Pokémon

Gholdengo is one of the most well-known Pokémon from the Paldea region, mostly due tohow Gimmighoul evoles into Gholdengo, and its unusual appearance. Gholdengo is a dual Steel/Ghost-type, similar to Aegislash. However, Gholdengo has nowhere near the same level of versatility as Aegislash. Instead, Gholdengo has a signature move in the form of a 120-power special Steel move, known as Make It Rain. Unfortunately, its move pool doesn’t contain too many Steel-type moves, meaning that it can’t make full use of the Steel type.

However,Gholdengo has access to a wide range of electric type moves, such as Electro Ball, Thunder Punch, Thunder, and Thunderbolt. This means that Mega Gholdengo could have the dual type of Electric/Ghost, a type combination only shared by Rotom. A Mega Evolution would also give it a generous stat boost, pushing its base stat total from 550 to well over 600. In terms of tapping into the full offensive potential of Gholdengo, an ability like Magic Guard could support it, by enabling it to attack without hesitation and fear of taking damage.

Sylveon looks ahead with its head tilted and its bows blowing in the wind.

2Sylveon Is The Eeveelution Introduced In Gen 6

The Intertwining Pokémon

Eevee is a fan-favorite and has been since it’s debut in the original games for the Game Boy,Pokémon Red and Blue.Mega Evolutions are exclusively reserved for Pokémon that have reached their final evolution, and since Eevee has eight different potential evolutions (commonly known as Eeveelutions), it’s tough to pick one Eevee over another as a candidate for Mega Evolution. Sylveon, however, has a special connection to Kalos, having first appeared inPokémon X and Y.

Since all of Eevee’s evolutions are single-type Pokémon, giving Sylveon a second type could be an interesting approach to take. Mega Sylveon could be an opportunity to introduce a Fairy/Dragon-type. The dual type has yet to be seen inPokémon, and it has the potential to be very powerful. It might seem unfair to select just one Eeveelution to get a Mega form, but it would certainly be a memorable addition toPokémon Legends: Z-A.
